SUMMARY:Sean Dobbins Modern jazz Messengers
DESCRIPTION:Southeastern Michigan jazz drummer Sean Dobbins has been the most active sideman on the local scene during the first decade of the new millennium for good reason. A facile\, limber\, inventive\, and playful musician who adds extreme value to any band\, his happy persona and zest for life easily translate into every performance. Stepping away from his duties with the mainstream jazz combo Urban Transport\, Dobbins and this quintet take their Modern Jazz Messengers name seriously\, in tribute to Art Blakey and the Blue Note hard and post-bop musicians of the ’60s who have influenced at least three generations of jazz lovers. Those three age brackets of players are represented here\, with baby boomer bassist Marion Hayden\, ’80s wunderkind vibraphonist Robert Pipho\, and Gen-Xers Dobbins\, pianist Steve Richko\, and alto saxophonist Dean Moore. All are impressive musicians — collectively and individually. From the Blakey repertoire are Wayne Shorter numbers — the bouncy shuffle groove “One by One\,” a unique 3/4 modal Latin treatment of “Lester Left Town” featuring Pipho on the marimba\, and the jumpy staccato-accented hard bopper “Ping Pong.” Moore is clearly the standout\, as his alto sax sound reflects Kenny Garrett in some respects\, but you hear a distinctiveness developing. He’s one to watch. There are several other tracks not readily associated with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, like standard takes of Cedar Walton’s “Bolivia\,” Tom Harrell’s “Sail Away\,” and Clare Fischer’s “Pensativa.” Chick Corea’s “Humpty Dumpty” has the most intriguing arrangement\, with Hayden’s bass leading\, Moore’s alto following\, and Pipho on the second chorus before all join in. The lone original is the title cut\, written by Dobbins\, a spirited waltz feature for Moore. A competent and credible effort\, if not all that original\, it’s a well-conceived and thoughtful recording of a combo that hopefully will do more\, stretch the parameters\, and expand its repertoire within Blakey’s purview or not.

SUMMARY:Holly Bowling
DESCRIPTION:Holly is a solo pianist that recreates the music of the Grateful Dead & Phish. In December she released “Better Left Unsung” and has been playing incredible shows in support of the album. She has shared the stage with Bob Weir\, Phil Lesh\, Branford Marsalis and many others who have asked her to perform with them. \nHolly Bowling is a classically trained pianist who began playing piano at the age of five. There’s one major distinction\, however\, that separates her from other similarly studied musicians. That is Holly’s devotion to the legendary rock band Phish. Having attended over 300 shows by the Burlington-based quartet\, she became obsessed by their famous rendition of “Tweezer” from Lake Tahoe on July 31\, 2013. It led Holly to transcribe this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arrange it for solo piano. The process\, both painstaking and fulfilling\, inspired her to transform other Phish songs and well-known live jams into solo piano interpretations. Holly’s breathtaking renditions of Phish classics like “It’s Ice\,” “The Squirming Coil” and “Harry Hood” serve not only as a tribute to the modern day kings of jam\, but stand on their own as fully developed classical pieces. The past year has seen Holly expand her repertoire into the realm of the Grateful Dead\, including an “Eyes of the World” based on the band’s spectacular exploratory June 18\, 1974 performance at Freedom Hall. Using classical piano technique to reinterpret these jamband luminaries\, Holly’s live performances infuse new with old\, tradition with surreal\, and creates a concert experience like nothing else in the music world. \nTICKET LINK:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/holly-bowling-at-cliff-bells-tickets-37137143195

SUMMARY:Emmet Cohen Trio
DESCRIPTION:Multifaceted American jazz pianist and composer Emmet Cohen is one of his generation’s pivotal artistic figures. Leader of the “Emmet Cohen Trio\,” Cohen presents jazz performance lectures through the YoungArts Foundation and Lincoln Center’s “Jazz for Young People” program. He has appeared in the Monterey\, Newport\, North Sea\, Bern\, and Edinburgh jazz festivals\, among others\, and at many famous music venues\, including Rose Hall and the Kennedy Center. Cohen has also played in legendary international nightspots\, such as Birdland\, the Blue Note\, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola\, Jazzhaus Montmartre\, and Ronnie Scott’s. He is Hammond B-3 organist-in-residence at Harlem’s Smoke jazz club. A Suzuki piano student at age three\, Cohen holds jazz piano degrees from the Manhattan School of Music (M.M.) and the University of Miami (B.M.). He was finalist in both the American Pianists Association’s Cole Porter Fellowship (2015\, 2011) and the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition (2011). Cohen has performed or collaborated with Jimmy Cobb\, Lea DeLaria\, Kurt Elling\, Billy Hart\, Jimmy Heath\, Ali Jackson\, Bill T. Jones\, Brian Lynch\, Christian McBride\, and Herlin Riley.

SUMMARY:Ben Sharkey & the Woodward Horns
DESCRIPTION:Singer Ben Sharkey is what you might call an “old soul.” In an age when flip-flops pass muster in church\, he wears tuxedos with the playful ease of a young Frank Sinatra. And while oversexualized lyrics and synthetic dance beats dominate the current top 40\, Sharkey croons classic love songs infused with jazz\, bossa nova\, salsa and pop.

SUMMARY:James O'Donnell CD Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Eastside Detroiter James O’Donnell was the protégé of the great trumpeter Russell Green (Jimmie Lunceford Band). The trumpet has taken him around the globe\, starting in New York City then Mexico City\, eventually becoming a bandleader on cruise ships which took him to the Caribbean\, the Alaskan Panhandle\, both the French & the Italian Riviera’s\, Spain\, Portugal\, Morocco\, Greece\, Turkey\, through Scandinavia to Russia as well as several trips crossing the Atlantic. He often backed guest artists including Freddy Cole. \nHe came home to start a family and has built a name for himself around town as an original trumpet stylist as well as an engaging singer. As a family man\, the holidays are always a big deal for him so putting this collection of holiday jazz together was an obvious choice. It will be available this evening at Cliff Bell’s.

SUMMARY:Alexis Lombre
DESCRIPTION:Alexis is a young jazz pianist who discovered that the true essence of music is not just about what you hear but how music makes you early feel. Her musical mission is to keep the ‘Soul’ in music alive. The recent release of her debut album\, Southside Sounds\, does just that\, as it is a soulful reflection of her upbringing on Chicago’s Southside. \nDue to the WSU Jazz recital\, Alexis will start at nine pm on this night. The last set many great young players sit-in with her band!

SUMMARY:The Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra\, started in April 1999\, was initially started as a rehearsal band for Gwinnell to hear his compositions and arrangements played. \nIn 2009\, the SGJO was chosen to be part of a big project proposed by the  Detroit Jazz Festival. The artist-in-residence\, bassist/composer John Clayton\, was commissioned to write a suite based on Detroit jazz legends. The SGJO would play a series of summer concerts\, with the finale being a performance\, closing that year’s festival. The suite paired the Clayton Brothers with the SGJO in a 55 minute concerto grosso. All of the musicians performed greatly\, receiving a 5 minute standing ovation. \nSome of the frequent musicians involved with the Cliff Bells SGJO group are: Keith Kaminski\, James Hughes\, Steve Wood\, Carl Cafagna\, and Mark Berger on sax. Dave Jensen\, Terry Kimura\, Tony Buccilli\, and Stefan Stolarchuk on trombone. Trumpets are Bob Jensen\, Paul Finkbeiner\, John Douglas\, and Justin Walter. Jordan Schug plays bass and Scott Kretzer plays drums. \nThe most recent project has been a recording of the music of Mulgrew Miller. Arranged by myself\, it puts a new spin on some of Mulgrew’s well and lesser known works as well as my original music. The record will be released in 2017. \nThe Oxford High School Jazz Band will open.
