SUMMARY:Sean Dobbins Modern Jazz Messengers
DESCRIPTION:Southeastern Michigan jazz drummer Sean Dobbins has been the most active sideman on the local scene during the first decade of the new millennium for good reason. A facile\, limber\, inventive\, and playful musician who adds extreme value to any band\, his happy persona and zest for life easily translate into every performance. Stepping away from his duties with the mainstream jazz combo Urban Transport\, Dobbins and this quintet take their Modern Jazz Messengers name seriously\, in tribute to Art Blakey and the Blue Note hard and post-bop musicians of the ’60s who have influenced at least three generations of jazz lovers. Those three age brackets of players are represented here\, with baby boomer bassist Marion Hayden\, ’80s wunderkind vibraphonist Robert Pipho\, and Gen-Xers Dobbins\, pianist Steve Richko\, and alto saxophonist Dean Moore. All are impressive musicians — collectively and individually. From the Blakey repertoire are Wayne Shorter numbers — the bouncy shuffle groove “One by One\,” a unique 3/4 modal Latin treatment of “Lester Left Town” featuring Pipho on the marimba\, and the jumpy staccato-accented hard bopper “Ping Pong.” Moore is clearly the standout\, as his alto sax sound reflects Kenny Garrett in some respects\, but you hear a distinctiveness developing. He’s one to watch. There are several other tracks not readily associated with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers\, like standard takes of Cedar Walton’s “Bolivia\,” Tom Harrell’s “Sail Away\,” and Clare Fischer’s “Pensativa.” Chick Corea’s “Humpty Dumpty” has the most intriguing arrangement\, with Hayden’s bass leading\, Moore’s alto following\, and Pipho on the second chorus before all join in. The lone original is the title cut\, written by Dobbins\, a spirited waltz feature for Moore. A competent and credible effort\, if not all that original\, it’s a well-conceived and thoughtful recording of a combo that hopefully will do more\, stretch the parameters\, and expand its repertoire within Blakey’s purview or not.

SUMMARY:Laura Rain and the Caesar's CD Release Party
DESCRIPTION:LAURA RAIN AND THE CAESARS  “WALK WITH ME” \nLaura Rain and the Caesars celebrate release of fourth album. \nLaura Rain and the Caesars have been putting a lot of miles on their Ford V8 motor the past couple years. After releasing their third album (Gold in 2015)\, the band continued their heavy touring schedule performing in Paris\, France to San Francisco\, CA bringing their unique Motor City funky soul to a new audience. \nLaura Rain is a singer with exceptional skill and power. She thrives on hard work\, dedication and resolve. Her ability to deliver her own songs with fearless emotion and excitement while performing is genuine\, and startling to witness. When she met her bandmate (now husband) George Friend\, the two shared a interest in creation. \n“When I first heard Laura sing I was astounded…she had the blues in her intonation\, and I could hear that she was an experienced and emotional performer…I thought I’d better start a band formed around her before someone else does!!” \nThe two set about writing music immediately\, and after a years worth of local gigs establishing both their repertoire and band\, they released an album. Much to their surprise\, the debut album Electrified (2013) received notable attention both in the press and on the airwaves. Local DJ’s Ann Delisi\, and Rob Reinhardt started spinning the record on Detroit’s WDET week after week. It was the inspiration needed to keep the songwriting duo on a constant schedule of writing in the morning\, and performing at night. \nThe next two albums Closer (2014) and Gold (2015) solidified the band’s reputation on a national level. The band toured from 2014-2017 almost every month. Radio play continued to grow and Laura Rain found herself performing at festivals and top-tier clubs throughout the U.S. and Canada. In 2016\, the duo also won their first Detroit Music Award for “Outstanding Blues Songwriter.”\nLaura Rain adds about her songs “I try and leave an uplifting feeling with people. I want them to be touched deeply and inspired. If all else fails\, a good funky beat will do the same.”

Expect high energy\, unpredictable improvisation\, and a diverse and eclectic mix of compositions.\n\nAndrew Bishop is a formidable multi-instrumentalist\, as well as an educator and scholar. He has played with Geri Allen\, Karl Berger\, Sandip Burman\, Kenny Burrell\, Eugene Chadbourne\, Ray Charles\, Gerald Cleaver\, Robert Hurst\, John Lindberg\, The Either Orchestra\, Mat Maneri\, The Manhattan Transfer\, Tony Malaby\, Ben Monder\, Jeremy Pelt\, Craig Taborn\, Clark Terry\, Matt Wilson\, and John Zorn\, amomg many others. Andrew is an associate professor of jazz and contemporary improvisation at the University of Michigan.\n\nKurt Krahnke has been one of the most in-demand bassists in the State of Michigan–-and beyond-–for decades. After getting a solid foundation at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music\, he toured the east coast with Ron Levy for two years and then went on play with Wendell Harrison\, Phil Lasley\, Jimmy Giuffre\, Joe Henderson\, Sonny Fortune\, Pinetop Perkins\, Russell Green\, and Leon Thomas. He is\, for very good reason\, one of the busiest bassists around.\n\nBob Sweet has been on the Detroit and Southeast Michigan scene since the seventies\, playing in a variety of soul\, pop\, blues\, and jazz ensembles. He was part of Roy Brooks’ Aboriginal Percussion Choir and played for a number of years with Detroit favorites the Sun Messengers\, as did Kurt Kranke. His connections with the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock\, New York\, have placed him in performance and workshop situations with Karl Berger\, the Art Ensemble of Chicago\, Jack DeJohnette\, Kirk Knufke\, Ed Blackwell\, and many other leading improvisers from around the world\n\nTad Weed has played with Charles Lloyd\, Carmen McRae\,  Woody Herman\, Mundell Lowe\, John Patitucci\, Vinny Golia\, Richie Cole\, Teddy Edwards\, and Dick Berk. He’s currently the associate professor of jazz piano at the University of Toledo. Leonard Feather\, in his Encyclopedia of Jazz\, said that Tad “displays a very rare ability to cross over from dashing bop lines to rich impressions\, he has all of the bases covered from funky blues to the border of the avant-garde.”\n[Photo credit\, Andre Thomas] \n

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis & Maitri
DESCRIPTION:“Imagine David Bowie producing a show featuring Sam Cooke songs as played by the Dirty Projectors.” Translated from Sanskrit\, Maitri (”my tree”) is an unconditional friendship and acceptance of yourself that extends outward to the world. This group was formed by Caroline Davis (voice/woodwinds) to embrace both the hardship and ecstasy of life through song\, and it is now a collective songwriting outlet for both herself and Ben Hoffmann (voice/keyboards). Featuring driving keyboards and a powerful rhythm section led by Sam Weber (bass) and Jay Sawyer (drums)\, Maitri incorporates a heavy dose of soul and R&B\, while also drawing upon indie influences. A unique sound in the Brooklyn musical landscape\, Maitri is the soundtrack for the inevitable ushering in of the new world order. \nThe leader is saxophonist Caroline Davis: Mobile since her birth in Singapore\, composer\, saxophonist\, and educator Caroline Davis now lives in Brooklyn\, New York. After making her mark on the Chicago jazz community during her 8-year stint there\, she moved to New York in 2013\, and has proven to be an active leader and sidewoman in the national jazz scene. \n
