DESCRIPTION:Alexis Lombre is a young jazz pianist who discovered early that the true essence of music is not just about what you hear but how music makes you feel. Her musical mission is to keep the ‘Soul’ in music alive. The recent release of her debut album\, Southside Sounds\, does just that\, as it is a soulful reflection of her upbringing on Chicago’s Southside. This collection of her original compositions is an attempt to pay homage to the southside’s lively artistic\, cultural heritage. Since its release\, Southside Sounds has been aired on radio stations across the U.S and is currently charting at #70 on JazzWeek.\n\nAlexis has performed at some of jazz’s major venues in Chicago\, Detroit\, New York City\, Newark\, St. Louis and Kansas City. Most recently\, she celebrated the release of her debut CD at Chicago’s historic Jazz Showcase. She appeared at the 2013 Chicago Jazz Festival performing the National Anthem opening for Jimmy Heath\, the Robert Glasper Experiment and the Donald Harrison Quintet. As an experienced bandleader\, the Alexis Lombre Quintet was featured most recently at the 2016 Chicago Jazz Festival\, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival in 2013 and 2015\, the Bucktown Arts Festival\, the Trinity UCC ‘Jazzapalooza’ Festival and many other festivals around Chicago. As a sidewoman\, she performed at the 2016 Detroit Jazz Festival with the John Douglas Quartet\,  the 2016 Englewood Jazz Festival in Chicago with the Donald Harrison Quartet and\, the 2016 Taste of Chicago with Donnie Trumpet (now Nico Segal) & the Social Experiment. She has also played and studied with other internationally known jazz artists such as Pharez Whitted\, Bobby Broom\, Ernest Dawkins\, Ingrid Jensen\, Kendrick Scott\, James Carter\, Bobby Watson and Benny Green.\n\n\nIn addition to herself on piano\, her band will include Trunino Lowe on trumpet\, Brian Juarez on bass & world traveling drummer Alex White.

DESCRIPTION:Emma Lee Aboukasm is an award-winning\, Detroit-based recording artist\, vocalist\, pianist\, and composer. Educated in classical and jazz music at the University of Michigan\, she is now performing everywhere in Detroit\, including intimate venues like the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe to expansive ones like the Detroit Jazz Festival.  \nRecently\, Emmalee co-produced her debut album Rise To It feat. Scott Gwinnell on piano\, Marion Hayden on bass\, Sean Dobbins on drums and Tristan Cappel on alto sax. The album contains jazz standards and original compositions by Emmalee. \nAboukasm won the Youth Vocal Jazz competition in Detroit\, MI in 2014. In 2015\, she made it to the top 5 finalists out of 2\,000 applications worldwide in the International Sarah Vaughan Vocal Jazz Competition. She performed for a panel of 5 judges including Christian McBride and Cyrille Aimée and played music from her CD on WGB0 radio in Newark\, NJ. She currently resides at the University of Michigan until she completes her undergraduate degree in jazz studies in 2018.

French philosopher Albert Camus suggested that given the similarity between the life of Sisyphus and our lives today\, the only reasonable response is to try to imagine him happy – hence the title of t…his project. We live in hard\, frustrating times – perhaps we always have – and now more than ever\, we need to turn to the music to make this hill we climb bearable. \nWith logic like that\, we give you ANOTHER OLD BULL\, a song about Trump and all the other little trumps out there. The antidote to their cynicism and self regard is found in the prescient music of the late Mose Allison\, whose personal wisdom and wise words are recounted in TOO MUCH TOO LATE as well as in one of the first songs he wrote\, BIG BROTHER\, and one of his last\, WAS. Mose was a shining light of reason in a world of dark dissemblance. \nThe song I COULD BE WRONG recounts what we’ve lost and the song EVERYBODY’S FAKING IT explains how we lost it. DESCRIPTION:Pianist Nick Masters\, returning to Detroit from New Jersey\, will lead a sextet that features Kasan Belgrave\, Nolan Young\, Allen Denard\, and Kayvan Gordon\, playing original music and arrangements. The group is made up of all the musicians that he grew up playing with in Detroit. \nNick is at at the prestigious William Paterson University where he has studied with Mulgrew Miller\, Harold Mabern\, and James Weidman. Since moving to Jersey City and NYC he has been studying with Johnny O’Neal and Norman Simmons and he runs a Friday session at Moore’s Lounge in Jersey City\, and also plays with drummer Winard Harper at Moore’s Lounge as a member of the house band for the ongoing Sunday “Meet the Artist” series which has featured Regina Carter\, Dave Stryker\, Russel Malone\, Rufus Reid\, Paul West\, Freddie Hendrix\, Lew Tabackin\, and many more.

Juli has played many jazz clubs and festivals nationally and internationally; Chicago Jazz Fest\, Hyde Park Jazz Fest\, Milwaukee’s Summeriest\, Chicago’s main jazz clubs – Jazz Showcase\, Green Mill\, Andy’s and Katerina’s. Skansen Jazz and Blues (Stockholm \, Sweden)\, Pori Jazz Fest (Finland)\, Bent J’s club (Aarhus\, Denmark)\, Storyville (Helsinki Finland)\, Arlandia Jazz Fest (Aaland Islands\, Finland) to name a few.\nJuli is in the tradition of saxophonists who were also great vocalists; Cleanhead Vincent\, Eddie Harris\, and Louis Jordan. Never has that been more apparent than in “5 4 3 2 1 Juli Wood\,” her latest recording and most ambitious project to date.\nOne of the pleasures of attending the Chicago Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend each year is being able to hear the bevy of local players who make up the windy city jazz scene. Last year’s treat was Juli Wood\, a gutsy tenor and baritone saxophonist who also sings with the earthy gusto of an R&B diva filtered through a hard bop sensibility. Bill Milkowski – JAZZTIMES\nJuli’s love for the saxophone goes way back. “I remember watching SOUL TRAIN as a kid on T.V. in the 70’s and seeing Maceo Parker playing alto sax with James Brown. I thought that was the coolest looking and sounding instrument in the world! So the love affair with the saxophone started in the sixth grade and has been going strong ever since.”
