SUMMARY:Alexis Lombre Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Alexis Lombre is a young jazz pianist who discovered early that the true essence of music is not just about what you hear but how music makes you feel. Her musical mission is to keep the ‘Soul’ in music alive. The recent release of her debut album\, Southside Sounds\, does just that\, as it is a soulful reflection of her upbringing on Chicago’s Southside. Since its release\, Southside Sounds has been aired on radio stations across the U.S and is currently charting at #70 on JazzWeek.\n\nAlexis has performed at some of jazz’s major venues in Chicago\, Detroit\, New York City\, Newark\, St. Louis and Kansas City. SUMMARY:Eddie Moore & The Outer Circle
DESCRIPTION:When you speak to Eddie Moore you find an ocean of calm\, and when you listen to Eddie Moore & The Outer Circle you find the depth of that ocean. Eddie reaches from the soul with every note\, in a deep way\, with a tension just below the surface that speaks of great things. His yearning for exploration and curiosity in music contribute to an ebb and flow freedom of expression\, that in result gives to new discovery. \nThe 2016 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Arts Award recipient formally began his musical journey at Texas Southern University where he earned a Bachelors in Arts in Piano Performance. Raised in Houston\, Texas Moore is a lifelong musician traversing a number bands and styles before going back to school to get a Masters in Arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City under the direction of Jazz Master Bobby Watson. \nDiversity and inclusiveness have become to define Moore as an artist. His expansive sensibilities have allowed him to perform and record with such distinctive artist such as Bobby Watson\, Pam\, Watson\, Logan Richardson\, Maurice Brown\, Krystal Warren\, Matt Otto\, Brandon Draper\, Andre Hayward\, Tivon Pennicott\, and 77 Jefferson. \nNominated as Best Soloist\, and Jazz Band (Eddie Moore & The Outer Circle) by Pitch Magazine. Moore’s music is a celebration of the integral differences in musical viewpoints.  “The Freedom of Expression”\, Moore’s debut album as a leader was given 3.5 stars from Downbeat jazz magazine while reaching national and international acclaim. This album incorporates elements of soul\, r&b\, and hip-hop into his take on contemporary jazz.  “Moore’s compositions exude a sophisticated soulful elegance that create a tastefully fulfilling venture into a range of dynamic pieces\, with the musicianship to match.” – Downbeat Magazine  \nMoore’s  third album with The Outer Circle\,  “Kings & Queens” released with Ropeadope Records.  “Kings and Queens” is a 3-part suite inspired by African-American history. The first movement goes back centuries to a time when African-American ancestors were literally kings and queens on their continent. Moore’s forward-thinking sounds are part of the rich continuum of African-American music that continues to be imbued with indigenous African elements. The Outer Circle’s remarkable sensitivity and cohesive interplay reflect an unflinching groove that sticks to your ribs. “Kings & Queens” has been featured in varied publications such as Jazziz Magazine\, The Jazz Ambassadors Magazine\, The Pitch KC\, and NextBop. \nMoore music celebrates the human experience while honoring the legacy of the American Idiom through his commitment to artistic inclusiveness\, and innovation. \nOfficial Website: www.eddiemooremusic.com

SUMMARY:Ben Sidran
DESCRIPTION:  \nBen’s first time in Detroit at Cliff Bell’s! \nWith Ben Sidran\, piano and voice\nLeo Sidran\, drums\nBilly Peterson\, bass\nBob Rockwell\, saxophone \n  \n  \nPICTURE HIM HAPPY is a response to the saying that our music is made by and for people who have chosen to feel good in spite of conditions: you often can’t affect what happens but you can determine how you respond to it. It’s a record that’s right on time. \nThe central image is that of Sisyphus\, the mythical man doomed to push the same rock up the same hill for eternity. French philosopher Albert Camus suggested that given the similarity between the life of Sisyphus and our lives today\, the only reasonable response is to try to imagine him happy – hence the title of t…his project. We live in hard\, frustrating times – perhaps we always have – and now more than ever\, we need to turn to the music to make this hill we climb bearable. \nWith logic like that\, we give you ANOTHER OLD BULL\, a song about Trump and all the other little trumps out there. The antidote to their cynicism and self regard is found in the prescient music of the late Mose Allison\, whose personal wisdom and wise words are recounted in TOO MUCH TOO LATE as well as in one of the first songs he wrote\, BIG BROTHER\, and one of his last\, WAS. Mose was a shining light of reason in a world of dark dissemblance. \nThe song I COULD BE WRONG recounts what we’ve lost and the song EVERYBODY’S FAKING IT explains how we lost it. And for levity\, there’s a love song to the New York subway that brings the hipsters in and out of Brooklyn\, THANK GOD FOR THE F TRAIN\, and a jaundiced look back at our communal COLLEGE experience. \nIf music is not only a reflection of our lives but a way to understand it\, this album\, once again\, establishes Ben Sidran—in the words of DownBeat magazine—as “the voice of his generation.” \n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/ben-sidren-tickets-35234925611\n

SUMMARY:Juli Wood Quartet
DESCRIPTION:For the past twenty years with three albums as a leader\, several studio projects as a side man\, and countless worldwide performances\, saxophonist\, vocalist and composer Juli Wood has established herself as a solid\, swinging\, lyrical and entertaining performer on Chicago’s music scene. Juli has played many jazz clubs and festivals nationally and internationally; Chicago Jazz Fest\, Hyde Park Jazz Fest\, Milwaukee’s Summeriest\, Chicago’s main jazz clubs – Jazz Showcase\, Green Mill\, Andy’s and Katerina’s. Skansen Jazz and Blues (Stockholm \, Sweden)\, Pori Jazz Fest (Finland)\, Bent J’s club (Aarhus\, Denmark)\, Storyville (Helsinki Finland)\, Arlandia Jazz Fest (Aaland Islands\, Finland) to name a few.\nJuli is in the tradition of saxophonists who were also great vocalists; Cleanhead Vincent\, Eddie Harris\, and Louis Jordan. Never has that been more apparent than in “5 4 3 2 1 Juli Wood\,” her latest recording and most ambitious project to date.\nOne of the pleasures of attending the Chicago Jazz Festival over Labor Day weekend each year is being able to hear the bevy of local players who make up the windy city jazz scene. Last year’s treat was Juli Wood\, a gutsy tenor and baritone saxophonist who also sings with the earthy gusto of an R&B diva filtered through a hard bop sensibility. Bill Milkowski – JAZZTIMES\nJuli’s love for the saxophone goes way back. “I remember watching SOUL TRAIN as a kid on T.V. in the 70’s and seeing Maceo Parker playing alto sax with James Brown. I thought that was the coolest looking and sounding instrument in the world! So the love affair with the saxophone started in the sixth grade and has been going strong ever since.”
