SUMMARY:Michael Zaporski & FutureVisions
DESCRIPTION:Michael Zaporski (piano) creates astonishing music that merges American jazz traditions with a West-African-influenced rhythmic dialogue. Serving as the pianist for the late Detroit saxophonist Sam Sanders\, Zaporski traveled to West Africa\, playing and teaching jazz through the U.S. State Department. This long-time association led to performances with such renowned jazz artists as Jackie McLean\, Frank Foster\, Art Blakey\, Pharaoh Sanders\, and Donald Byrd. \nThrough his own group\, FutureVisions\, Zaporski has garnered headlining performances at jazz festivals and colleges\, and has released several recordings—including one for orchestra\, chorus\, and jazz quartet—to critical acclaim. While still actively performing with his own group\, Zaporski has found a home with the prestigious Planet D Nonet\, where he draws upon his vast musical experiences within a large ensemble context. \nWhether fronting his own group or playing with the Planet D Nonet\, Michael imbues every original composition and jazz-standard with a wealth of sophistication gained through his wide travels and broad musical connections. Combining adrenaline-pumping energy levels with African rhythms and haunting melodies\, Zaporski continues the pursuit of excellence and individuality that is the essence of the American jazz tradition.

SUMMARY:Roger Jones & Higher Calling
DESCRIPTION:Roger L. Jones II is a native of Flint Mi.  Since 1989 he has worked professionally with various artists in the USA\, Japan\, and Turkey.  Roger discovered his musical abilities when he was a youngster at church.  His gospel background provided a spring board to his passion for playing jazz music.  The church Greater Holy Temple COGIC where his father is pastor\, was like a musical battle ground for young musicians.  Roger cites his non- gospel influences as Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Herbie Hancock\, and McCoy Tyner.  After graduating from high school\, Roger attended Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin Ohio.  While attending Oberlin\, Roger’s understanding and musicianship grew exponentially.  Many performance opportunities were afforded\, and his reputation grew.  Since this time\, Roger has performed and “sat in” with various musical icons associated with jazz and other musical styles.  Some of these individuals include Wynton Marsalis\, Joe Henderson\, Wallace Roney\, and JJ Johnson to name a few. \nRoger has developed into a cutting-edge band leader.  His band\, “Roger Jones & Higher Calling” is comprised of phenomenal musicians dedicated to inventing fresh and innovative ways to approach the execution of music.  Mixed with a soulful and modern approach\, the music of this band is innovative\, relevant to the current generation\, and swings ridiculously hard.  There is no doubt that Roger L. Jones II will be heralded as one of the most explosive and innovative pianists of his generation.

SUMMARY:Vocalist  Michelle Lordi
DESCRIPTION:October 21 An Evening with Vocalist  Michelle Lordi\nColton Weatherston- guitar\nRobert Mervak-piano\nJohn Dana- bass \n“An emotionally insightful performer with an arrestingly beautiful sound”-Andrew Gilbert\, San Francisco Chronicle. \nA singer blessed with a sumptuous voice and persuasive sense of swing\, Michelle Lordi turns each musical encounter into an emotionally charged communion\, creating an exhilarating circuit between her voice\, her collaborators and the audience. \nWhether she’s stretching out with Philadelphia or New York  jazz legends\, exploring experimental soundscapes\, or delivering taut\, mesmerizing pop ballads with The Bad Plus pianist Orrin Evans\, Lordi is looking for those moments of discovery when the unfolding musical narrative reveals something new and unexpected.  She is  comfortable exploring an array of musical currents\, but is most drawn to jazz. \nHer critically hailed 2015 album Drive centered on her collaboration with fellow Philadelphian Orrin Evans\, the brilliant pianist who produced the project and accompanied her on a luscious\, ballad-laden program. She followed up with 2017’s Dream a Little Dream\, a briskly swinging set of standards featuring some of Philly’s most revered jazz veterans\, particularly tenor saxophonist Larry McKenna and guitarist Sonny Troy. \nSinging with poise and purpose\, Lordi draws creative sustenance from these well-traveled musicians\, who’ve played an essential role in her growth. “I really owe this album Sonny and Larry and that session\, and it reflects all of the fun we’ve had at Vintage\,” says Lordi\, referring to the weekly jam session she launched in the fall of 2014 at Vintage Bar & Grill in Abington\, a town a few miles north of Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:Owen Broder & Cowboys & Frenchmen
DESCRIPTION:Owen Broder – saxophones\nEthan Helm – saxophones\nChris Ziemba – piano\nEthan O’Reilly – bass\nMatt Honor – drums \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCowboys & Frenchmen is a new take on instrumentation\, orchestration\, and composition for the jazz quintet. The front line of two alto saxophones is the vehicle for reimagining the role of horns in a small group setting\, charting new territory by exploring individuality within homogeneity. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe New York City-based quintet is releasing its second album\, Bluer Than You Think\, in October 2017 on Outside In Music. Their first release\, Rodeo (Outside In Music\, 2015)\, garnered terrific reviews and enjoyed top placement on radio charts. The release of Rodeo was celebrated at Joe’s Pub\, one of New York’s most respected venues for creative music. Cowboys & Frenchmen was a featured presenter at the 2016 North American Saxophone Alliance Conference\, which served as the centerpiece for a performance and educational tour through Texas. They performed at the D.C. Jazz Festival in 2016 as finalists in the inaugural D.C. JazzPrix Competition\, and again in 2017 as a featured artist. They were also selected to perform at Umbria Jazz Festival’s 2017 Conad Jazz Contest. \nThe inspiration for our band name\, Cowboys & Frenchmen\, is a short film by David Lynch\, called The Cowboy and The Frenchmen. The film is a Western – but a “Lynchian” Western. Like many of his films\, it is his unique\, out-there interpretation of a classic genre. Similarly\, a lot of our music has one foot firmly planted in a genre\, while the other one is busy trying to kick down the genre’s door. \n\n\n\n\n\n
