SUMMARY:Joey Defrancesco Organ Trio
DESCRIPTION:“(Joey)was playing with the intensity of a runaway train”\n-Peter Hum of the Ottawa CitizenJoey DeFrancesco’s emergence in the 1980s marked the onset of a musical renaissance. Organ jazz had been a form of music that literally went into hibernation from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties largely because of the introduction of high-tech\, light-weight keyboards. It was Joey\, however\, that ignited the flame once again with the sound of his vintage Hammond organ and Leslie tone cabinet. He not only illuminated this once dormant music form but brought back the many proponents of jazz organ who had been shuffled by record producers and club owners to lesser roles within the music industry. Befriending and supporting those who preceded him\, Joey became the new-age proponent of an instrument that had been pushed aside in favor of the growing technology.\nConsidered a child prodigy\, Joey remembers as far back as age four\, playing jazz tunes modeled by his father\, Papa John DeFrancesco and memorizing music from the many jazz albums in their home. Papa John\, a jazz organist himself\, took young Joey under his wing and nurtured his rapidly developing skills\, bringing Joey along with him to gigs\, Joey would sit-in with as many seasoned Philadelphia musicians who were around. Legendary players like tenor saxophonist\, Hank Mobley\, or drummer\, Philly Joe Jones\, would soon become aware of young Joey DeFrancesco and acknowledge his enthusiasm. Joey’s grandfather and namesake\, Joseph DeFrancesco\, was the patriarch and\, himself\, a musician’s musician; able to pick up a new instrument and teach himself to play. This gift was passed down to young Joey and now manifests itself in Joey’s extraordinary keyboard skills; piano playing; and organ wizardry  not to mention his undeniable mastery of the trumpet.  \nGet tickets here \n

SUMMARY:The Bad Plus
DESCRIPTION:Two separate seatings at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. \nThe Bad Plus have cemented their place as an original music ensemble. Except for their interpretation of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring — their last four albums focused almost exclusively on original compositions. It’s Hard\, however\, will mark The Bad Plus’ return to an aspect of their roots\, the very thing that first made The Bad Plus famous: the deconstruction of songs from the Pop/Rock and R&B worlds. \nAmong the tightest\, hardest-working bands in the world — and there has not been a line-up change or substitution in 17 years — this is a band in their prime\, returning to early form\, which is an event not to be missed! \nhttp://www.thebadplus.com/ \n*Photo by Josh Goleman \nPurchase advance tickets here.

SUMMARY:Aguanko
DESCRIPTION:Aguankó\, the ensemble led by percussionist and composer Alberto Nacíf\, is a talented group of Michigan based musicians who are steeped in the tradition of jazz infused Son-Salsa. In La Bicileta and Chiquita\, for example\, you might hear shades of Conjunto Libre or Eddie Palmieri’s La Perfecta Orchestra. And\, like the Fort Apache Band\, there are Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms\, as in the percussive Rumba Elemental. The overall feel on Elemental is relaxed; the Jazz is sophisticated\, but accessible in essential ways. It’s graced with a driving funk and sabor that comes only from years of developing a musical sensibility that speaks from both the heart and soul of the band members. With Paul Vornhagen\, Javier Barrios\, Patrick Prouty\, Wesley Reynoso\, Paul Finkbeiner\, Russ Miller\, Chris Smith\, Alex Nacif and special guest percussionist José “Pepe” Espinosa. Top notch stuff\, this. Very Highly Recommended. – elWatusi \n  \nThe show will be the official album release of Aguanko’s Christmas CD. \n“…we predict that the ensemble Aguankó will soon become one of your favorites. This elegant Latin jazz group is led by conguero Alberto Nacif\, former host of WEMU’s “Cuban Fantasy” program which is now hosted by Marc Taras. Expect rave reviews and international attention for “Elemental” by Aguankó. WEMU is honored to be the first radio station on the planet to play this beautiful\, inspirational Latin Music.” – WEMU NPR Radio station \n  \nhttp://www.aguanko.com/
