SUMMARY:Nick Adams and the Aral Sea Divers
DESCRIPTION:Nick Adams and the Aral Sea Divers play a lively blend of roaring 20s-era jazz\, a testament to time when classical and military musical traditions were infused with fresh and exciting African American energy. “That’s a special moment in American history\, a blending of aesthetic but rigid European styles with new raw energy\, adding just the right amount of danger to the mix\,” says founder Aaron Corte O’Brien. \nThe Aral Sea Divers have been reviving that original balance of orchestration and improvisation through traditional\, and inventive\, approaches to jazz standards. The group originated between university students in the Upper Peninsula\, taking the spirit of Hemingway’s fictional character\, adventurer and yooper “Nick Adams” as an elusive member of the group. In the UP the group played a variety of venues\, including the Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival\, Marquette Michigan Beer Festival\, and a mix of breweries\, retirement homes\, and veteran’s centers. Aaron recently put a new lineup of the group back together after moving to Detroit with co-founder\, clarinetist Audra Hagan\, and they are looking forward to continue playing this timeless music throughout the city.

SUMMARY:Nick Finzer
DESCRIPTION:Award winning musician Nick Finzer is a jazz trombonist and composer whose musical prowess is firmly planted with one foot in the past and another leading to the future. In January of 2013 Nick released his recording debut as a bandleader “Exposition” on his new label Outside in Music. “Exposition” presents Finzer’s unique musical lens\, featuring ten original compositions that draw on the multifaceted influences that have shaped his musical development. \nThe onset of Nick’s love for jazz came through an exploration of Duke Ellington’s music during his high school years. Tunes like “Harlem Airshaft” and “In a Sentimental Mood” started him on an irreversible musical journey. These experiences culminated in a performance of Elllington’s music as part of the Essentially Ellington Festival hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center\, which ignited Nick’s ambition to move to New York City to play music. \nDuring this time Finzer also came under the tutelage of former Jazz at Lincoln Center Trombonist\, Wycliffe Gordon. This relationship developed into a four year commission project in which Gordon wrote four pieces to feature Nick during his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. While studying at Eastman\, Nick was able to play with many musicians who came through Rochester\, New York including engagements with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra\, Walt Weiskopf\, John Clayton and Slide Hampton. \nSince moving to New York City in 2010\, Finzer has completed a Masters Degree from The Juilliard School\, shared the stage with the likes of Frank Wess at Dizzy’s Club\, Lew Tabackin and Terrell Stafford at The Blue Note\, and continues to lead his own bands both around the city and across the country. While at Juilliard Nick had the opportunity to work with many mentors including Frank Kimbrough\, Carl Allen\, Ray Drummond\, and studied under jazz trombone innovator\, Steve Turre. \nNick was selected as a finalist in the 2010 International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition and in 2011 was the winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop National Jazz Trombone Competition\, where he performed alongside Jim Pugh\, Bill Reichenbach\, and Steve Wiest. \nFinzer is also a committed educator. In 2012 Nick’s new Non Profit\, the Institute for Creative Music won a “Great Classrooms” grant award from the Plum Creek Foundation. Nick currently serves as Co-Artistic Director for the Institute for Creative Music\, which is dedicated to the education and dissemination of jazz and creative music across the nation. Since IfCM’s founding in 2011 Nick has lead workshops\, masterclasses\, and residencies spanning from coast to coast. \nIndependently\, Nick has worked with students from the Eastman School of Music\, Penn State\, Ithaca College\, Gonzaga University\, and Eastern Washington University\, to name a few. He has also served on the faculty of the Eastman Summer Jazz Camp\, and Juilliard Jazz Summer Camps in West Palm Beach\, Florida and Ephraim\, Utah. \nNick continues to perform\, compose\, and teach around New York City while maintaining an active touring schedule\, and formulating new projects. Finzer is determined to continually develop his artistry from the lineage of the music\, while being honest to his musical voice and personality.\nNick was selected as the winner of the 2011 Eastern Trombone Workshop Jazz Trombone competition\, culminating with Nick performing with the U.S. Army Blues alongside Steve Wiest\, Jim Pugh\, and Bill Reichenbach. The year previous\, Nick was chosen and performed as a 2010 finalist in the International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition. \nA 2009 Alum of the Eastman School of Music with a Bachelors in Jazz and Contemporary Media; Nick had the opportunity to perform with some of the many great musicians and bands that passed through Rochester\, New York including The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra\, John Clayton\, Slide Hampton\, Bill Dobbins\, Walt Weiskopf\, David Gibson\, and developed a working relationship with trombonist Wycliffe Gordon. Via the Commission Project\, Nick worked with Mr. Gordon to premiere four original pieces (two for sextet and two for big band) between 2005 and 2009 and had the opportunity to combine the experience with workshops for local high school students featuring both Nick and Mr. Gordon. \nAs a leader\, Nick has toured his groups across the United States presenting masterclasses\, improvisation workshops\, and television\, radio\, and live performances in Arizona\, Delaware\, Washington\, Pennsylvania\, Massachusetts and New York. \nNick keeps an active performing schedule as both a sideman and leader around New York\, as well as traveling to perform and teach with The Juilliard School and Nick’s own projects.

SUMMARY:GFK Trio

Each member’s love for the funky and soulful tradition pioneered by artists like Jimmy Smith\, mixed with influences from pop\, rock\, funk\, hip hop and electronic\, have lead to the trio’s sound: an intense\, soulful\, energetic and entertaining musical experience. You can expect to hear both modern and classic tunes however you will be surprised at how flawlessly the group integrates fresh new sounds\, rhythms\, grooves and exciting solo sections. The audience may want to dance\, or they may listen intently to the group’s musical synergy. SUMMARY:Harmonica Shah and Howard Glazer
DESCRIPTION:No Cover \nBorn in California\, Shah also spent time in Somerville\, Texas\, with his blues harmonica and guitar playing grandfather\, Sam Dawson. Dawson had recorded for both Alan Lomax and Duke Records. His mother\, a beautician\, encouraged him to be a salesman for Jet magazine in the latter part of the 1950s. This allowed Shah access to Oakland’s bars and clubs\, where he heard musicians such as Lowell Fulson\, Jimmy McCracklin\, Juke Boy Bonner and Big Mama Thornton.\nShah told Living Blues magazine that his grandfather’s passion for the blues inspired him. “Well see I picked it up from him\, he’d be out in the fields singin’ all that (sings in a slow moan) ‘Tell me how long\, whoa\, tell me how long it’s been since you’ve been away from home’ Well\, that’s raw! That’s a big damn difference from ‘Good Golly Miss Molly'”.\nHe moved to Detroit in 1967\, and worked for Ford Motors for fifteen years. Shah bought himself a cheap harmonica in 1976 and\, while operating as a taxicab driver\, Shah was introduced to local blues jam sessions. “Hell\, that was it\, no turning back then”\, Shah recalled.

SUMMARY:GFK Trio
DESCRIPTION:GFK Trio formed in the spring of 2013 with the idea of acknowledging\, extending and revitalizing the classic instrumental jazz organ trio. Dan Gruszka’s mix of classic soul jazz guitar influence and a pedal board ready to create a Pink Floyd-esque wall of sound brings a breath of fresh air to the organ jazz genre. Layer that on top of Scott Kulik’s exacting command of the Hammond Organ locked with Eric “Fil” Fillip’s funk and breakbeat inspired drumming and you have the recipe for an exciting night of music. You can expect to hear both modern and classic tunes however you will be surprised at how flawlessly the group integrates fresh new sounds\, rhythms\, grooves and exciting solo sections. The audience may want to dance\, or they may listen intently to the group’s musical synergy. Either way\, GFK Trio has a passion for music and they want to share it with you. \nGFK is Dan Gruszka (Guitar)\, Eric “Fil” Fillip (Drums) and Scott Kulik (Organ).

SUMMARY:Michael Zaporski's FutureVisions
DESCRIPTION:Michael Zaporski creates astonishing music that merges American jazz traditions with a West-African-influenced rhythmic dialogue. Serving as the pianist for the late Detroit saxophonist Sam Sanders\, Zaporski traveled to West Africa\, playing and teaching jazz through the U.S. State Department. This long-time association led to performances with such renowned jazz artists as Jackie McLean\, Frank Foster\, Art Blakey\, Pharaoh Sanders\, and Donald Byrd. \nThrough his own group\, FutureVisions\, Zaporski has garnered headlining performances at jazz festivals and colleges\, and has released several recordings—including one for orchestra\, chorus\, and jazz quartet—to critical acclaim. Combining adrenaline-pumping energy levels with African rhythms and haunting melodies\, Zaporski continues the pursuit of excellence and individuality that is the essence of the American jazz tradition.

SUMMARY:Organissimo
DESCRIPTION:You might notice of something different at an organissimo performance. The audience isn’t the typical homogenous “jazz” audience. You’ll see a healthy mix of people from all walks of life; young and old\, black and white\, from hippies to corporate professionals and everything in between. organissimo’s music skirts over fences and satisfies a diverse range of tastes. You’re as likely to see people dancing as a group of folks intently listening. \nAs American cultural critic Elvis Mitchell wrote after witnessing a show at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge\, “The group’s toned\, muscular playing keeps the crowd rapt\, a condition noticeable by the fact that almost no one is talking.“ \nOrganissimo formed in November of 2000 with the goal of bringing jazz back to the people. organissimo’s sound is instantly identifiable yet constantly evolving\, infusing elements of funk\, gospel\, blues\, progressive rock\, and Latin rhythms into a solid foundation of jazz. Shifting meters\, deep grooves\, melodic finesse and tight ensemble interplay are hallmarks of the organissimo sound.
