SUMMARY:paris_monster
DESCRIPTION:Beat-driven. Employing heavy elements of funk and soul\, paris_monster closes the gaps between synth-pop & garage; between modern detail and old-school grit. Solid earth. Soaring soundscapes. A mass of noise. Volatility. Vocal singularity.\nThe Deli NYC calls paris_monster “a precise\, complex and sophisticated mechanism” with a “a monstrous instrumental technique”\, delivering a sound that “could be the new face of American roots rock”. \nIn fall of 2017 paris_monster began recording their first full length LP\, set to be released in 2018. The album will solidify their dirty\, glitchy\, lyric-centered\, groove-based sound\, and will be a milepost in their search for a focused and flexible musical approach. The elements of funk and soul join with lyrical themes of bygone eras in rural settings\, characters lost\, and mortality confronted. Love achieved\, and denied. Americana. Themes in stark contrast to the pounding grooves and electronic mayhem\, creating depths and dimensions that could have been otherwise achieved only by dropping a modular synth in the corn fields of central New York or the woods of Connecticut. And maybe that’s exactly what happened. \nLesley Keller of Pancakes & Whiskey said\, “Each time I see them perform I’m dumbfounded at just how great they are”. paris_monster’s live show is something to behold. The challenge when seeing them live is getting past the fact that there are only two people creating all that sound. Two people. A drum set. A bass. A keyboard. A eurorack modular synth. One microphone. And all that sound. Beyond this visual impossibility is a careful and deliberate balance of sounds\,colors\, and textures. Melodies to serve a story. Chaos to destroy preciousness. The Deli NYC observed\, “infallible superior forces: as we all know now\, ‘with great power comes great responsibilities\,’ and the duo never abuses of it – that’s what good musicianship is.” paris_monster’s full catalogue is available NOW on iTunes. The Deli NYC said of recent release “Ain’t No Movin’ Me”: “…[paris_monster] showcases its prowess for hook writing/crafting a track that could stand without accompaniment as a blues-y\, spiritual declaration\, but is launched into another realm by its bed of synths and echoing choruses. An inspired take on blues folk that’s both hypnotic and engaging.” \nhttps://www.parismonster.com/

SUMMARY:Rod Williams Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Pianist/Composer Rod Williams was born in Detroit April 15\, 1954 and studied with the great pianist Kenny Cox. In the summer 1981 he was playing with the Sam Sanders’ group “Visions” at the Detroit Jazz Center as an opening act for Air (Henry Threadgill\, Fred Hopkins and Steve McCall)\, Henry Threadgill strongly encouraged him to move to New York and in the fall of 1981\, he did so\, which is where he currently resides. \n“Pianist-composer Rod Williams’ typically stimulating original “Home Sweet Home” opens his fine 1989 LP “Hanging in the Balance” (Muse). It would certainly be an appropriate piece for the Detroit-born Williams to include when he returns to the Motor City. Williams made his reputation working with a range of left-of-center voices\, among them David Murray\, Henry Threadgill\, Dewey Redman and Lester Bowie. He has also proven to be an alert accompanist for vocalist Cassandra Wilson early in her career. But like most Detroiters\, Williams retains an essential versatility\, and there’s not much across the post-bop landscape you could throw at him that he can’t handle. His improvisations alternate between a scampering kind of percussive rumble with a smoother\, more pianistic touch\, and his compositions reveal a personal approach to melody and structure” -Mark Stryker\, Detroit Free Press June 17\, 2015 \nHe will perform with two generations of Detroit Jazz musicians- Marcus Elliott\, Rocco Popielarski and Djallo Djakate.

Standing room only. Excludes tax and gratuity. \n“…One of Detroit’s great party bands\,” with a “sweeping field of vision that ranges from Swing Era classics to connoisseur works by Duke Ellington\, mind-expanding pieces by the visionary Sun Ra and some down-and-dirty joint R&B.” Brian McCollum of the Detroit Free Press. \nDetroit’s own down and dirty little big band\, known nationally for curating some of the best in early jazz traditions and Black-American musical influences from the 20s\, 30s and 40s\, Planet D Nonet is more “hot” than “sweet\,” according to PD9 cofounder and bandleader RJ Spangler\, who started the nine piece ensemble with longtime musical partner James O’Donnell in 2007. \nPD9\, a pared down version of the traditional big bands of the 1930s\, frequently features guest vocalists\, adding to the versatility of the band’s show. The number of musicians in the lineup is reminiscent of the earliest big bands\, when swing was still evolving into the sound that defined jazz music’s most popular era. \n“The band retains the agility of a small group\,” says Spangler\, “but with the harmonic palette of a larger one.” The band’s repertoire is unmatched\, in one set paying tribute to the music of Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson\, and in another the proto-R&B sounds of Detroit artists such as Paul “Hucklebuck” Williams and King Porter as well as national treasures like Louis Jordan & Buddy Johnson. \nThe group has been nominated and awarded multiple honors over the past decade\, including several Detroit Music Awards 2011-2018. In 2018\, PD9 was named DMA for Outstanding Traditional Jazz Artist/Group. \nPD9’s latest release\, A Salute to Strayhorn\, features musical selections associated with the composer\, lyricist\, arranger and pianist Billy Strayhorn\, best known for his celebrated musical collaborations with Duke Ellington. \nWith all the hours that PD9 have put in pounding the musical pavement\, it’s hard to imagine that any avowed Ellington/Strayhorn fan hasn’t yet experienced them\, whether live or recorded. The 2016 release provides the perfect opportunity to discover this group known for putting body\, soul and spirit into every bit of music they touch. If you have not yet experienced Planet D Nonet\, your groove tank is missing out on some serious fuel.\nThe Planet D Nonet has performed at Festivals and night clubs in Ohio\, Indiana\, Chicago (IL)\, Kentucky\, Mississippi\, New Orleans (LA)\, FL\, Atlanta (GA)\, Charleston (SC)\, Asheville (NC) and all over Michigan! \nThe PD9 Strayhorn CD was endorsed by the Strayhorn Family and hit #17 on the National JazzWeek chart\, #23 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Chart and was considered for a Grammy. \nReservations: https://reserve.com/r/cliff-bells-detroit \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vjn69EURUkE&list=PL9bmvZ83bmHOykke-dj-1BKQTrUlOe7ZE\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_yrQsGby_U\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcDeybZPii0 \n
