SUMMARY:Andrew Rathbun
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes are at 7:30p & 9:30p for this performance. \n(Doors open at 5pm for dinner/Seating begins at 6:15p for the first show & 9:00p for the second show) \n************************************************************************************************** \nSaxophonist\, composer\, bandleader and Toronto native Andrew Rathbun has achieved a rare depth of lyricism\, authoritative swing and compositional intelligence in nearly 20 years as a recording artist. His work is rooted in modern jazz but also deeply informed by classical composition — his recordings have included adaptations of Ravel\, Mompou and Glück\, among others. He has written big band commissions for the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra\, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra\, the Metropole Orkest and other ensembles\, and performed and composed commercial music for roughly 10 years as well. \nAnother of Rathbun’s inspirations is poetry: his recordings Jade and True Stories set to music the verse of Cathy Song and Margaret Atwood\, respectively (both albums featured acclaimed Brazillian vocalist Luciana Souza). His 2002 release Sculptures featured trumpet legend and Toronto native Kenny Wheeler in a set that “cloak[s] subtle avant-garde proclivities in soft light and open air” (JazzTimes). \nRathbun has also tackled political subjects with his large-ensemble work “Power Politics Suite” and his 2007 quintet session Affairs of State. His other recordings of note are Renderings (duo with pianist George Colligan)\, Days Before and After (co-led with drummer Owen Howard)\, Shadow Forms (featuring George Garzone)\, Where We Are Now (featuring Billy Hart)\, The Idea of North and Numbers & Letters. \nRathbun earned a Masters in Performance from Boston’s New England Conservatory\, where he studied with George Garzone\, Jimmy Giuffre and George Russell. He became a fixture on the New York jazz scene during his years in Brooklyn\, helping to shape the sound of the music in the new millennium as he earned a Doctorate in Jazz Arts from Manhattan School of Music. He is currently Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo\, where he lives with his family. He continues to perform in New York and internationally \n

SUMMARY:Ingrid Racine Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes are at 7:30p & 9:30p for this performance. \n(Doors open at 5pm for dinner/Seating begins at 6:15p for the first show & 9:00p for the second show) ************************************************************************************************** \nTrumpeter Ingrid Racine transgresses stylistic categories and geographic boundaries in pursuit of her own authentic sound as an improviser and composer. Steeped in the traditions of early jazz and Detroit hard bop\, she also melds rock\, hip hop and aesthetic influences from across the globe to arrive at her unique sound\, which is both confident and versatile. In the words of jazz critic Michael G Nastos\, “She is a little on the funk side of jazz\, but can swing as hard as she needs to…” \nBorn in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Ingrid Racine received a BFA in Jazz Studies and MM in Improvisation from the University of Michigan\, where she studied improvisation with Donald Walden\, Geri Allen\, Marion Hayden\, and applied trumpet with Bill Lucas and Ingrid Jensen. By her early 20s\, she was performing with an eclectic array of ensembles\, including  the early jazz group Phil Ogilvie’s Rhythm Kings\, Mady Kouyate’s Heat of Africa\, and the Detroit-based all female jazz group Straight Ahead\, in addition to steady sideman work in local small jazz groups.  She toured nationally and internationally with the post-afrobeat group NOMO from 2003-2009\, including performances at WOMEX (Sevilla\, Spain)\, Aspen Jazz Festival\, Bonnaroo Music Festival\, Bumbershoot (Seattle) and Pitchfork Festival. In 2016\, Ingrid released her debut record as a bandleader\, entitled “Concentric Circles\,” and she currently maintains an active schedule as both a sideman and leader throughout the midwest.
