SUMMARY:Strictly Fine (Soul Band)
DESCRIPTION:After years in bands under various leaders playing all over the midwest in basements\, bars\, festivals\, and stadiums\, we have joined forces to party on any stage that welcomes us. We sing\, shout\, and sometimes do a bad impersonation of James Brown when the soul takes us. The rhythm section grooves so tight and has a pocket so deep it’s similar to falling into a black hole with Bobby Brown telling you to get on up\, so I’ve heard. \nSometimes we have coordinated outfits\, possibly even matching sequined jackets (not really). We might look like we just woke up and grabbed whatever was on top of the clean laundry basket\, but one thing holds true\, our sock game is always strong. \nWe have a hard time containing ourselves and can pretty much be found having a good time wherever we are\, leaving a trail of coordinated dance moves and slick horn lines in our wake. Our serious profile picture is only an indication of our dedication to our music. We definitely smile and laugh a whole lot more than the photo lets on. \nWe are Strictly Fine: \nDave Vessella-Trumpet/Vocals\nChris Kendall-Trombone/Vocals\nGarrett Gaina-Baritone Sax/Guitar/Vocals\nMike Harrison-Keys/Guitar/Vocals\nRick Morrone-Bass/Vocals\nEric Childress II-Drums/Percussion\nSean Perlmutter-Drums/Percussion

SUMMARY:The Bill Heid Trio
DESCRIPTION:Keyboardist/vocalist Bill Heid was born August 11\, 1948\, in Pittsburgh\, PA. A natural and virtuosic musician who was inspired to play jazz and blues by listening to the radio\, he played in both piano and organ groups. His brother is the well-respected drummer and producer George Heid. Originally influenced by Jimmy Smith and Don Patterson\, Heid heard the chitlin’ circuit greats at the Hurricane Bar\, including Smith and Patterson\, Jack McDuff\, Jimmy McGriff\, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. Down the street at the Crawford Grill were the jazz bands led by Freddie Hubbard\, Max Roach\, Gene Harris\, Bobby Timmons\, and Wynton Kelly. \nOn occasion he would sit in with some of these groups and pester them for information. Spending time in Chicago and later in New York\, he met and hung out with his mentor\, Larry Young\, often visiting the family-owned Newark Club in Young’s hometown of Newark\, NJ. He was also privy to playing with the best organ drummers like Joe Dukes and Billy James. And he heard the local contingent of jazz greats like Ahmad Jamal\, Art Blakey\, Erroll Garner\, George Benson\, Eddie Jefferson\, Mary Lou Williams\, and Stanley Turrentine. \nHis quest for musical knowledge found him on the road when in 1963\, in search of rare 78-rpm rhythm & blues records\, he began a journey/career of hitchhiking. He did this in the contiguous 48 states of the U.S.; through Canada\, Mexico\, the Philippines\, Japan\, Korea\, and China; and to the Thailand/Cambodia border. His over 400\,000 documented miles of thumbing a ride gained Heid a spot in The Guinness Book of World Records. Some of his journeys led him to the so-called chicken houses and organ rooms of major cities\, where he interned with Jimmy Witherspoon\, Jimmy Ponder\, Sonny Stitt\, Grant Green\, David “Fathead” Newman\, Ira Sullivan\, and Mickey Roker\, and was a pianist with Don Patterson. \nA move to Chicago brought him closer to the urban blues as he worked or recorded with Muddy Waters\, John Lee Hooker\, and especially Son Seals\, Koko Taylor\, Fenton Robinson\, and Roy Buchanan. He also did two LPs and played in the bands of contemporary jazz guitarist Henry Johnson. Moving to Detroit\, he spent two decades there playing in his own groups; helping to revive the career of a local legend of blues guitar and vocals\, Johnnie Bassett\, as the music director of his Blues Insurgents; and backing the veteran singer Alberta Adams. During and since his time in Detroit\, Heid could be found making music soundtracks for adult films in Los Angeles\, then touring worldwide for the U.S. State Department as a jazz ambassador\, particularly on tours of Japan and Vietnam. In August 2003\, Heid played more of the Pacific Rim in Sri Lanka\, Indonesia\, Malaysia\, and Singapore. \nUpon moving back to the Eastern United States\, he could be heard on organ and piano engagements at various venues in the Washington\, D.C.\, area. Of his mindset\, Heid was quoted as saying “I can’t live a day without playing 1-4-5s\,” incorporating those standard blues changes with cool McCoy Tyner minor riffs\, vicious funk songs in Japanese\, and what he calls Talifunk. “I approach this thing like total war and have been lucky to have avoided a day job.” His hip vernacular\, unique vocal language\, and risqué sense of humor\, melded with his passion for baseball\, have made him an \nArtist Biography by Michael G. SUMMARY:Stephane Wrembel Band presents The Django Experiment
DESCRIPTION:“Perhaps the most creative improviser in Gypsy jazz today\, Mr. Wrembel plays the guitar with a rich and colorful lyricism.” -New York Time \nhttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/19/arts/music/pop-rock-and-jazz-in-nyc-this-week.html \n“Stephane Wrembel represents the living face of Gypsy jazz” and Rolling Stone Magazine has called him “a revelation”      –The New York Observer  \nStephane Wrembel is quite simply one of the finest guitar players in the world. The breadth and range of his playing and compositions are unmatched. To say that Wrembel— who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside— has already had a remarkable career would be an under-statement. This prolific\, virtuoso guitarist has been releasing a steady stream of music since 2006 and has truly made his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. Stephane Wrembel is widely known for “Bistro Fada”\, the theme song from the 2011 Woody Allen Oscar winning film and Grammy Award winning soundtrack\, Midnight In Paris. \nBorn in Paris and raised in Fontainebleau\, the home of Impressionism and Django\, Wrembel has been based in the New York City region for the past 20 years and since his studies at Berklee. He has toured around the world\, and is very active on the musical scene in many countries including USA\, Canada\, France\, Israel and India. Recently\, Stephane has performed as a headliner at the legendary Carnegie Hall and at The Town Hall in New York as well as at the Festival Django Reinhardt in France. Wrembel has also headlined at Lincoln Center\, played major Festivals\, recorded with mandolin legend David Grisman\, toured with master violinist Mark O’Connor and shared stages with al long list of world renowned musicians. \nIn 2017\, Stephane Wrembel produced and headlined his Django A Gogo concert held at Carnegie Hall in New York. The event received rave reviews and included guitar masters Al Di Meola\, Larry Keel\, Stochelo Rosenberg and other gifted musicians all celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt. In 2018\, Django a gogo was held at The Town Hall in New York. the show included many European masters of Jazz Manouche and featured bluegrass legend Sam Bush. \nThe musicians will be: Stephane Wrembel (guitar)\, Ari Folman-Cohen (bass) and Sara L’Abriola (guitar). \n$15 at the door\, $10 for students and seniors

SUMMARY:Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The name of late jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller may not trip off the tongue of the casual jazz fan\, but make no mistake\, among the genre’s aficionados\, he was and is considered a musician’s musician. Versatile and singular\, he pushed jazz to the limit harmonically\, but always with a swinging sensibility.\nMiller could accompany anybody\, whether it was a vocalist or a horn player\, he fit in every kind of setting. He was the guy you wanted on your album. But what perhaps even fewer people are aware of is that Miller was more than just a remarkable piano player\, he was also a prolific and talented composer and arranger.\nMulgrew-ology\, the second Detroit Music Factory recording by Detroit-based jazz pianist\, composer and arranger Scott Gwinnell\, explores this lesser-spotlighted side of Miller.\nGwinnell intersperses Miller’s compositional ideas throughout a body of arrangements that include songs penned by Miller as well as other artists’ compositions for which he was famous for playing in his certain way—because even when Miller played someone else’s tune\, it was a markedly Mulgrew Miller version.\n“There are certain albums where the work is about you and you want to shine through your own work\,” says Gwinnell. “But this record is more about Mulgrew than about me.”\nJust as the inflections\, the words\, the idiosyncrasies that make up a person’s manner of speaking sum up into one’s personality\, Miller’s compositions and playing have a definitive voice. Gwinnell mined for those nuances\, the subtle licks and chord progressions\, choices like the melodic sequence that Miller plays over a diminished harmony\, the stuff that tells you you’re listening to Mulgrew Miller.\nAccording to jazz musician and producer Tony Ruda\, who wrote the album’s liner notes:\n“In [Miller’s] recordings\, you hear a pianist steeped in the hard bop tradition whose style could just as soon catch you off guard with the most wonderfully lyrical phrase. His style was never flashy\, because a true professional doesn’t need to be – why go for the cheap trick on the keys when you can turn a beautiful melodic line that will leave a captive audience breathless?”\nAlthough Mulgrew-ology is a deep-dive into the essence of Miller’s compositional skills\, Gwinnell takes what Miller did in his compositions and uses that imprint in different ways throughout his arrangements. The 17-piece orchestral arrangements help provide Gwinnell a blank canvas with which to bring the album to life\, and listeners who are not new to Miller will appreciate the uncharacteristic choice.\n“[Mulgrew-ology’s] title track is exemplary of [Gwinnell’s] strong compositional style\, giving us a tune that swings hard and sets the tone for the rest of the album\,” writes Ruda. “Jazz veterans James Hughes on saxophone and Paul Finkbeiner on trumpet both treat us to some terrific soloing in turn\, as the conversation between the rhythm and brass sections draws us into Gwinnell’s high-spirited arrangement.”\nTo jazz fans for whom Mulgrew-ology is an introduction to Mulgrew Miller\, here’s the thing: when you hear Miller-esque tunes\, they sound familiar\, they make sense. It’s not a standard\, not a Great American Songbook tune\, but it goes beyond that. According to Gwinnell\, it’s still rooted in “sensible listening.” The music is so catchy\, so beautiful\, it doesn’t matter that the name Mulgrew Miller is unfamiliar. What matters is how enjoyable you’re likely to find Mulgrew-ology.\nRuda on Miller and Gwinnell:\n“…any commentary about Mulgrew’s quiet command of his instrument or the understated quality of his playing would not do him justice. For that\, we simply have to turn to the music – only through hearing his compositions do we truly get close to Mulgrew Miller the man. Thankfully\, with Scott Gwinnell’s album Mulgrew-ology\, we are treated to sparkling arrangements of his work that add a new dimension to our understanding of what jazz meant to Mulgrew Miller\, and perhaps more importantly\, what Mulgrew Miller meant to jazz. It’s an absolutely beautiful homage.” \nNOTE: A student jazz ensemble will open up at 7 pm with Scott and his band coming on at nine pm.
