SUMMARY:The Shawn Maxwell Quartet
DESCRIPTION:As a composer\, recording artist and performer\, saxophonist Shawn Maxwell has endeavored to express his own unique voice. From his latest album Millstream (Jazzline\, 2020) to his debut Originals (self-released\, 2005)\, he has released nine albums of original compositions. The traditions of jazz form the foundation for Shawn’s music; he builds on that with material from the music he grew up with – rock\, funk\, hip hop\, R&B\, classical.  The result\, as Hrayr Attarian wrote in Chicago Jazz Magazine\, “is refreshingly distinct yet recognizably Maxwellian”. He’s not intent on following any rules – or on breaking them – but on continually expanding what his music encompasses. \nFor the past three years\, Shawn has been touring the U.S. with his quintet Shawn Maxwell’s New Tomorrow. Their first album\, Shawn Maxwell’s New Tomorrow (OA2/Origin\, 2016)\, was named one of Downbeat Magazine’s “Best Albums of 2017”. The follow-up\, Music in My Mind (OA2/Origin\, 2018)\, was highly praised by critics and enthusiastically received by radio stations.  It was chosen as a Downbeat Magazine Editor’s Pick in June 2018.

SUMMARY:Maraj Virtuoso
DESCRIPTION:Maraj Virtuoso is a multi-cultural Afro-LatinX vocalist and violinist who believes she was born to express her story and love through story-telling\, songs and strings.  \nShe creates music that fuses Neo-Soul\, Jazz\, Latin influences along with dashes of R&B and Indie. This creates a delicious sound with lyrics that weave a story of personal testimony\, lifes beautiful twists and turns\, vulnerabilities while touching on mental health.  \nMaraj Virtuoso begin playing the violin at the age of 3 and continued to study classical violin under the tutelage of the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra and the mentorship of DSO & New Mexico Philarmonic violinist Marian Tanau. \nHer exploration in improvisational strings and her true vocalist style begin in 2014 after continuing music studies at Wayne State University. She then found herself falling in love with lyricism as well as the ins and outs of production and live instrumentation. She expanded her taste in music alongside the open ears and support of her parents who wanted to help her express herself through any form of music out there. She has performed at many venues and festivals across Detroit\, Chicago\, Brooklyn and Los Angeles having opened up for artists like Black Milk alongside Phil Swish\, Kaina\, DeadstockV1\, Supercoolwicked and more.  \nCurrently living and creating in Detroit\, she finds herself constantly inspired by her continued pursuit of all knowledge musically but also the internal self reflection as well as the incredible musicians that surround her in her life. Through her soon to be released project A.D.H.D (Angels.Demons.Hearts.&Dreams) she wants to bring to light that we are all human and in this life\, through music and song we are all beacons of light and love.  \nThat we are all capable of kintsirugi. To extend grace beyond measure to not only others but ourselves.  \nOver the course of her performances at Cliff Bells she will be joined on-stage by openers\, friends and performing artists Hugo Biggs\, McCrea Deezer\, and Kevin Christian adding hints of hip-hop and pop.

SUMMARY:The Joel Frahm Trio
DESCRIPTION:There will be two shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm for this performance. \n*********************************************************************************** \nJoel Frahm is known to all jazz-lovers as a modern icon of the tenor saxophone. An unsurpassed emotional projection and technical ability always characterize his playing which draws on the breadth of the American musical tradition including jazz\, funk\, rock and blues. His work as a leader and his collaboration with the leading players of his generation including Brad Mehldau\, Matt Wilson\, Jane Monheit and Ari Hoenig have established him as among the most important and exciting players of our time. \nThe New York Times says\, “Joel has established an identity … as a saxophonist with a deft and assertive command” and the Ottawa Citizen sums it up well\,  “Joel Frahm is widely known in the jazz world for his effusive creativity\,  rollicking positive spirit\, technical fluency and versatility.” Brad Mehldau\, Joel’s childhood friend and longtime collaborator\, digs a little deeper\, “When I think of Joel\, I think of his sound on the tenor\, big and generous\, very warm and comfortable.  One thing I always hear in Joel’s playing is an unapologetic emotional outpouring.” \nJoel’s new trio is an international affair\, consisting one of Canada’s most prolific bandleaders\, Ernesto Cervini (Myriad3\, Turboprop) on drums and composer/bandleader/bassist Dan Loomis (of The Wee Trio\, TS Monk\, Vadim Neselovskyi.) This band has been playing together for almost a decade in Ernesto’s Turboprop and his Quartet\, the ECQ. They will be touring in support of their first trio record together\, ‘The Bright Side’\, out now on Anzic Records.

SUMMARY:ELEW
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes are at 7:30p & 9:30p for this performance \n(Seatings begin at 5p & 8:45p respectively) \n**************************************************************************************** \nEvery once in a while\, an artist comes along who changes everything. Producing something completely new and meaningful\, this person fills a void within the fabric of our culture—a hole we didn’t even know was there. Past generations have laid claim to this type of iconoclast—Liszt\, Warhol\, and Coltrane are among the artistic beacons of years gone by. Today\, another joins their number—an innovator\, musical revolutionary and unmatched performer: ELEW\, aka Eric Robert Lewis. Fusing traditional jazz with elements of modern rock and pop\, ELEW’s masterful originals and blistering re-interpretations have ignited the interest of the country’s tastemakers and those in the cultural know. But more than this\, he possesses that ineffable spark that we only associate with true genius. Everything that he creates bears his singular mark—the stamp of something that we have never seen or heard\, but have always wanted to feel. \nA native of Camden\, New Jersey\, ELEW began his musical studies at a young age. After being granted a full scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music\, he set his sights toward making noise on a grand scale. Upon graduation\, he toured the world\, recorded\, and performed continuously with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra\, Elvin Jones\, Cassandra Wilson\, Roy Hargrove\, and Joe Henderson among others. \n1999 offered a formal confirmation of what was rapidly becoming clear when ELEW won the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. It’s a contest that goes beyond simply rewarding musical proficiency\, instead recognizing the elusive combination of knowledge\, command\, passion and expression that define a true piano master. \nToday\, bolstered by his virtuosic quartet\, ELEW has created a riveting new sound that is at once fresh and classic. In the jazz tradition of interpreting popular tunes of the day\, much like Art Tatum and John Coltrane\, ELEW manipulates and performs renditions of rock and pop songs by today’s top artists. A musical contortionist\, his compositions twist\, turn\, and careen between styles\, sounds\, and emotions\, resulting in a stunning aural experience. His new style is becoming so popular that his gigs are beginning to extend into the realm of film industry\, opening new doors for his talent to be recognized.
