SUMMARY:The Orrin Evans Trio
DESCRIPTION:There will be two shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm for this performance. \n(Seatings to begin at 5pm & 8:45pm respectively) \n************************************************************************************************** \nFor more than two decades\, Yamaha pianist Orrin Evans has made an art form of the unexpected. With more than 25 albums to his credit without ever relying on the support of a major label\, Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who’s made a habit of rattling the jazz world’s confining cages. That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll and two Grammy nominations. As a daring pianist\, Evans combines raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance into a sound wholly his own. As an adventurous composer he traverses stylistic boundaries with abandon\, drawing on full-throttle swing\, deep rooted blues\, expressive soul or bracing excursions into the avant-garde. As an audacious bandleader\, he delights in daring fellow musicians to take bold risks\, whether in mutable small group settings or his raucous Captain Black Big Band. As an inventive collaborator\, his projects range from the nerve-rattling collective trio Tarbaby\, to the guitar/piano duo project Eubanks-Evans-Experience\, and Brazilian project Terreno Comum.

SUMMARY:Samara Joy feat. Pasquale Grasso Trio
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes are at 7:30p & 9:30p for this performance \n(Seatings begin at 5p & 8:45p respectively) \n************************************************************************************************ \nWith a voice as smooth as velvet\, SAMARA JOY’s star seems to rise with each performance. Following her winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition\, she is currently recording her debut recording\, which will feature Samara backed by the Pasquale Grasso Trio.  \nGrowing up in New York\, music was a pervasive presence\, due to the inspiration of her paternal grandparents\, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon\, who led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group\, The Savettes. Her father toured with the renowned Gospel artist Andrae Crouch\, and her home was filled with the sounds of not only her father’s songs and songwriting process\, but the inspiration of many Gospel and R&B artists\, including Stevie Wonder\, Lalah Hathaway\, George Duke\, Musiq Soulchild\, Kim Burrell\, Commissioned\, and many others.  \n“Although I didn’t grow up singing in church\,” explains Samara\, “I constantly heard my family singing inspirational music together\, which instilled in me an appreciation for my musical lineage. Through musicals in middle school\, I loved exploring the range of my voice and applying the different colors to fit the characters I played. Finally\, during high school\, I joined the choir at my church\, eventually becoming a worship leader\, singing three services a week for nearly two years. That was my training.” \nSamara’s first exposure to jazz was while attending Fordham High School for the Arts\, where she performed regularly with the jazz band\, eventually winning Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition. However\, jazz wasn’t really her focus until the time came to choose a college. Wanting to attend a state school close to home\, she picked SUNY Purchase\, gaining acceptance into their acclaimed jazz program\, with a faculty that includes many jazz masters (including Pasquale Grasso and drummer Kenny Washington\, who both appear on her debut recording.)  \n“My friends were all into jazz and started sharing their favorite recordings with me to check out. The turning point was when I heard both Sarah Vaughan’s version of ‘Lover Man’ and Tadd Dameron’s recordings featuring trumpeter Fats Navarro. I was hooked.” \nFrom this point\, she began to pursue her jazz studies with an intense passion\, eventually being named the Ella Fitzgerald Scholar and entering and winning the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.  \nAlthough having only recently celebrated her 21st birthday\, Samara has already performed in many of the great jazz venues in NYC\, including Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola\, The Blue Note\, and Mezzrow\, in addition to working with jazz greats such as Christian McBride\, Pasquale Grasso\, Kirk Lightsey\, Cyrus Chestnut\, and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Barry Harris.  \nSamara’s self-titled debut recording is slated for release on July 9 through Whirlwind Recordings. It presents her backed by the trio of guitarist Pasquale Grasso\, bassist Ari Roland\, and drummer Kenny Washington. Within the album’s liner notes\, veteran writer Will Friedwald comments that Samara Joy is “a fantastic collection of highly original new arrangements\, beautifully sung by a rising talent\, and a very impressive first album. People are forever using the word ‘timeless’ as if it were the greatest praise ever\, but in a way\, Samara’s voice and her music seem to belong to all time\, like she’s connected to the entire history of jazz all at once – as if she were existing in every era simultaneously\, she sounds both classic and contemporary.”  \nWinning the Vaughan award was transformational for Joy. “I was suddenly on the jazz radar. It’s still bizarre to think of how fast things have progressed.” Since then\, Joy has dug deep to discover her jazz roots\, without losing sight of the innate simplicity that makes her sound shine. Her first album announces the arrival of a young artist destined for greatness. \n  \nFind out more about her HERE!

SUMMARY:Salim Washington
DESCRIPTION:A master tenor saxophonist\, multi-reedsman\, composer\, and jazz educator\, Salim Washington is one of the fastest rising stars on the New York jazz scene today. The leader of the Harlem Jazz Ensemble\, he’s also a historian who studied under Henry Louis Gates at Harvard and wrote a doctoral dissertation on John Coltrane. \nA master tenor saxophonist\, multi-reedsman\, composer\, and jazz educator\, Salim Washington is one of the fastest rising stars on the New York jazz scene today. Born in Memphis\, Tennessee\, the eldest of five children born to Tony Washington and Stella Jean Key\, he moved to Detroit\, Michigan with his family at the age of eight.\nAs was the custom in Black Bottom Detroit\, he was drafted into the neighborhood gang (in those days\, youth gangs were more involved in petty mischief than in homicide and the drug trade). The gang leader happened to play trumpet\, and was the vessel that led Salim to music. Having more talent for music than for gangs\, he pursued music first as a trumpet player\, and later as a student of classical piano. By middle school\, Salim was playing in school ensembles and student funk bands. He also was deeply influenced by the musical culture of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC)\, a Pentecostal sect in which his father was a minister.\nAfter hearing a jazz ensemble of professional musicians for the first time\, he began a search for recordings: a friend of his passed on influential recordings by Sonny Rollins\, John Coltrane\, the Miles Davis Sextet at Newport\, and Thelonious Monk. These sounds changed him forever\, so much so that he was driven to give away a sizeable soul and R&B collection (a move he later admits to regretting). This was the time in which he became a true believer\, especially in the sound of Trane.\nHis college years brought him to the Boston area and Harvard. During his first year as an undergrad\, he discovered Charles Mingus\, and listened very closely to his music daily. Mingus had a profound effect on his composing\, in much the same way as Rahsaan\, Trane\, Pharaoh\, and Dolphy had on his playing. He began to hang out with friends from the Berklee College of Music\, and had every intention to quit Harvard and transfer. He was talked out of it by Eileen Southern\, the dean of black musicology\, then the head of Afro-American Studies. However\, the life of the gigging jazz musician proved irresistible – he spent more time practicing\, playing\, and composing\, and quit school after two years. Out of school he joined the Worlds Experience Orchestra under the leadership of Jamyl Jones\, which played “free” but was very disciplined at the same time. Their specialty was collective improvisation.\nHe then joined the Source of Life Arkestral Revelation (SOLAR) in Boston\, touring with them extensively throughout the south. Their brand of music was conscious music with a spiritual message. They played an underground “chitlin circuit” from Georgia to Louisiana.\nReturning back home to Detroit\, he became much more involved with his church. In COGIC\, he led the gospel band and choir. He also joined the Sun Messengers\, a band which was inspired by Sun Ra’s Arkestra. He played with other Detroiters and began teaching music in prisons through the Prisoners’ Access to Creative Experiences (PACE). He also taught music in Detroit’s public schools. \nHe eventually returned to Boston to finish his degree\, and gradually became part of the Roxbury music scene. After apprenticing in clubs such as Wally’s\, M&M’s\, Slades\, Taurus\, and Connolly’s he joined the Billy Skinner Double Jazz Quartet (DJQ)\, with whom he made his first recording and overseas tour. After the dissolution of the DJQ\, he began to lead his own band. \nHis first major gig as a leader was with an ensemble he put together for the Dark Room\, a reading series featuring established and emerging literary talents from the African-American tradition. From this gig was born the Roxbury Blues Aesthetic (RBA)\, which provided him with sympathetic musicians who would concentrate on a repertoire of his original compositions as well as the music of Mingus\, Monk\, Stevie Wonder\, and others. He began to earn commissions as a composer and arranger\, and also recorded his debut CD “Love In Exile” with RBA\, featuring pianist and composer\, Joe Bonner. While doing this\, he was midway through graduate school at Harvard\, where he wrote a dissertation entitled “Beautiful Nightmare: Coltrane\, Jazz\, and American Culture\,” under the supervision of Henry Louis Gates. It is now being prepared for publication as a major historical work.\nWith doctorate in hand\, he headed to New York to play in the city\, as well as begin a professorship at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. While on a commission for works celebrating the life and music Dexter Gordon he established a new group\, the Harlem Arts Ensemble\, which continues the legacy of the Roxbury Blues Aesthetic. \nIn addition to his own group\, Salim plays regularly with a number of ensembles including the Donald Smith Quintet\, Antonio Dangerfield’s Ensemble Uniqua\, Frank Lacy’s Vibe Tribe\, and the Frank Lacy Octet\, James Jabbo Ware’s Me\, We\, and Them Orchestra\, the Brooklyn Repertory Ensemble\, Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora\, and the Carl Grubbs group. He has travelled extensively\, playing music festivals throughout the US and Canada\, Latin America\, and Europe. He has also led music workshops for the Northern Ireland Arts Council in Belfast\, the Bill Evans conservatory in Paris\, Harvard University\, the Vermont Jazz Center\, Plymouth State College\, and others. He is a member of the Jazz Study Group at Columbia University and has participated on various committees and panels in service of jazz\, including those convened by the Ford Foundation\, the Boston Pheonix\, the New England Foundation for the Arts. Today he lives in South Africa where is currently a professor of jazz studies.
