SUMMARY:DAVID THOMAS & CO
DESCRIPTION:David Thomas is a multi-instrumentalist\, bandleader\, composer\, and educator from Rochester Hills\, Michigan who performs mainly in the Metro-Detroit area. He sings and plays a wide variety of instruments which includes the piano\, Rhodes electric piano\, organ\, trumpet\, piccolo\, flute\, melodica\, and glockenspiel. David’s musical foundation began as an infant because his mother continually filled their home with music from a wide variety of artists and genres\, many of which she took him to see in concert. Eager to learn how to play the piano\, he began taking formal lessons at the age of 7. For 6th grade band class\, he was “fit” with the trumpet and hasn’t put it down since. \nTurning down scholarships from other universities\, he was hopeful to study with the legendary Rodney Whitaker at Michigan State University and was delighted when he was accepted into their Jazz Studies Program. It was there that David formed his first jazz groups\, DTQ (David Thomas Quartet) and The Funtet. He graduated from MSU with his Elementary Education Degree and his Minor in Music. With a desire to learn other instruments\, he taught himself to play the piccolo and the flute. While the piccolo can be an uncommon instrument to hear in a jazz group\, David has found a way to incorporate its sound into his jazz renderings. \nCurrently\, David entertains his audiences with his variety of instruments and vocals while performing solo\, with his own jazz group\, DAVID THOMAS & CO.\, and with other stellar musicians such as RJ Spangler\, James O’Donnell\, Sheila Landis and Rick Matle. He has a deep passion and love for jazz history and is a bit of a jazz nut\, always hungry to learn more.

SUMMARY:Ursula Walker & the Buddy Budson Quintet
DESCRIPTION:Ursula Walker has been a mainstay of the Detroit music world for 66 years\, beginning at the age of eleven on Detroit television and radio. Her outstanding talents as a unique stylist of ballads\, standards\, and jazz gained her national recognition among her peers\, fielding many offers to tour nationally – with Stan Kenton\, the Harry James Band\, Count Basie\, and Tony Bennett. Over the years she has performed at countless clubs\, concerts\, and festivals\, frequently at the Detroit Jazz Festival. She has opened for many well-known performers\, including Dizzy Gillespie\, Oscar Peterson\, and Tania Maria. Ursula has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards\, one of which she is especially proud: the 2007 Southern Christian Leadership Conference Aretha Franklin Award for outstanding achievement in the Performing Arts. On August 5\, Ursula received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2012 Detroit Black Music Awards\, honoring her then-60-year career as a jazz vocalist in Detroit. \nBuddy Budson has been playing jazz piano around the Detroit area for the past 58 years. In 1973\, Buddy joined drummer Buddy Rich’s big band\, toured England\, Australia\, and the United States\, and recorded an album with the band. Soon after\, Buddy toured with both guitarist Earl Klugh\, and the Motown group\, The Four Tops. He has also backed well-known performers including Henry Mancini\, Mel Torme\, Sammy Davis\, Jr.\, Marlena Shaw\, Charles McPherson\, and Steve Turre. When the Fox Television Network debuted in the late ‘80’s Buddy composed and arranged the theme and transitional music for the sitcom\, Duet. Ursula also sang the theme and additional music for the show. He has also done vocal and instrumental arrangements for big band and orchestra. \nUrsula Walker and the Buddy Budson Quintet perform standards and jazz classics\, with an emphasis on well-known jazz instrumentals with lyrics written by Ursula and Buddy. The quintet features some of Detroit’s finest jazz musicians: on trumpet\, Dwight Adams; on saxophone\, Keith Kaminski; on bass\, Kurt Krahnke; on drums\, Dave Taylor.

SUMMARY:Mother's Day w/ the ReaDeal Big Band
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 2006 by two top Detroit musicians\, Leo Rea\, a trumpeter\, and Vaughan Klugh\, a guitarist\, the ReaDeal Band began rehearsing with 6 players and quickly grew to a full sized 17 piece big band with 5 saxes\, 4 trumpets\, 4 trombones\, and a rhythm section including piano\, bass\, drums\, and guitar.  Their first opportunity to play in public was at Bert’s Marketplace in the Eastern Market area of Detroit\, where they performed many times with several top Detroit area singers\, including Gary Sacco and Joan Crawford. The band continued to perform at many venues in the metro area including clubs & outdoor park concerts. \nWith the passing of Leo Rea in 2012\, the band members decided to continue playing the fine book of arrangemnts that Leo had assembled and began rehearsing at the Birmingham Unitarian Church in Bloomfield Hills\, under the leadership first\, of Wally Fitz\, and later\, John Hammer.  The band is now basically a rehearsal band\, playing in public only once a year or so at a benefit concert at the church. We’re pleased and honored to be performing at Cliff Bell’s this next May 13.

SUMMARY:Jenny Scheinman & Allison Miller’s PARLOUR GAME
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Scheinman & Allison Miller’s PARLOUR GAME celebrates the popular roots of jazz. It honors the groove\, the conversation\, the game\, and the women that made jazz a social music. It features four musicians that have been at the forefront of American music for nearly 20 years bending genres\, creating new ways of playing\, mixing it up. Now they get to groove. \nParlour Game was born on tour when Carmen Staaf and Tony Scherr were subbing for the piano and bass player in Allison Miller’s ‘Boom Tic Boom’. There was an immediate chemistry. “Even the edgiest material swung\,” says Miller\, “and we realized that we had found something really special. It felt so good!” \nScheinman and Miller met in Brooklyn in the early 2000’s. Scheinman had come from a rural roots background and was immersed in the downtown NYC music scene. Miller had come from DC swing and had a steady gig with Dr Lonnie Smith. Their insatiable curiosity and general gregariousness brought them into a variety of different genres. Scheinman formed a lifelong connection with Bill Frisell and wrote and released nine albums featuring some of the most innovative jazz musicians of our time such as Jason Moran\, Ron Miles and Nels Cline. She also dove headfirst into the roots world\, touring with a number of iconic American artists such as Lucinda Williams\, Rodney Crowell\, Robbie Fulks\, and Bruce Cockburn. Miller jumped on the Toshi Reagon bandwagon and joined Natalie Merchant’s band. She taught at the New School and worked with Ben Allison\, Rene Rosnes\, Brandi Carlile and Ani Difranco. She became the special guest drummer on Late Night With Seth Meyers. \nStaaf and Scherr are also versed in numerous American genres\, and share a deep respect for roots music. Staaf has worked closely with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter\, and Scherr has played extensively with Bill Frisell\, Sex Mob and Maria Schneider. Scherr once described Staaf as “totally unpredictable\, and totally reliable.” Seated quietly at her piano\, Staaf opens up a magnificent world of harmony while Scherr follows from below\, grounding her most outrageous revelations. \n“I have often played music that is in some way a reaction to jazz\,” says Scheinman. “In this group I just want to play a great melody\, feel the groove\, and let the audience in. So much can happen at a show when everyone is in it together.” \nThe name of the band references parlor music\, parlor games\, and the great organizers whose movements were born in the parlor. Imagine the parties they had! And yes\, it is about time that one of our newest super-groups features three women. \nJenny Scheinman – violin\nCarmen Staaf – piano\nTony Scherr – bass\nAllison Miller – drums

SUMMARY:Planet D Nonet
DESCRIPTION:If you have not yet experienced Planet D Nonet\, your groove tank is missing out on some serious fuel. \nThey’re Detroit’s own down and dirty little big band\, known nationally for curating some of the best in early jazz traditions and Black-American musical influences from the 20s\, 30s and 40s. More “hot” than “sweet\,” according to PD9 cofounder and bandleader RJ Spangler\, who started the nine piece ensemble with longtime musical partner James O’Donnell in 2007.\nPD9 is a pared down version of the traditional big bands of the 1930s\, and they frequently feature guest vocalists\, adding to the versatility of the band’s show. The number of musicians in the lineup is reminiscent of the earliest big bands\, when swing was still evolving into the sound that defined jazz music’s most popular era.\n“The band retains the agility of a small group\,” says Spangler\, “but with the harmonic palette of a larger one.” \nBrian McCollum of the Detroit Free Press calls Planet D Nonet “one of Detroit’s great party bands\,” with a “sweeping field of vision that ranges from Swing Era classics to connoisseur works by Duke Ellington\, mind-expanding pieces by the visionary Sun Ra and some down-and-dirty joint R&B.”\nThe group has been nominated and awarded multiple honors over the past decade\, including several Detroit Music Awards. Most recently\, they were named 2016 DMA for Outstanding Traditional Jazz Artist/Group\, and not surprisingly that was not the first time they received that award. \nPD9’s latest release\, A Salute to Strayhorn\, features musical selections associated with the composer\, lyricist\, arranger and pianist Billy Strayhorn\, best known for his celebrated musical collaborations with Duke Ellington. \nThe cuts are a mix of studio and live recordings\, including a performance of “Such Sweet Thunder” captured at Detroit’s NPR station WDET. Vocalist Camille Price brings sultry and seductive stylings to a few cuts including “Imagine my Frustration\,” and “I’ve Got it Bad\, and That Ain’t Good.”  But as in PD9’s club performances\, it’s when trumpeter James O’Donnell comes out from behind his instrument that listeners sway a little more languidly as he glides into the crowd favorite “Satin Doll.” \nWith all the hours that PD9 have put in pounding the musical pavement\, it’s hard to imagine that any avowed Ellington/Strayhorn fan hasn’t yet experienced them\, whether live or recorded. Luckily\, the fall/2016 release provides the perfect opportunity to discover this group known for putting body\, soul and spirit into every bit of music they touch.

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis
DESCRIPTION:From Caroline Davis’s “Heart Tonic” (3/23/18) on Sunnyside Records.\nFor the past four years\, saxophonist/composer Caroline Davis has been tied up in matters of the heart. Her focus is multi-tiered\, however. There are the metaphorical facets\, including her feelings about her recent relocation to New York from her longtime home in Chicago and the emotional rigors of navigating the path of an itinerant musician within the City’s bustling jazz scene. There is also a more physiological aspect\, as Davis has actively researched the life giving organ and its properties in dealing with her father’s own heart ailment. All of these forces come to bear on her new recording\, Heart Tonic. \nBorn in Singapore to a Swedish mother and British father\, Davis grew up in the United States from the age of six\, settling first in Atlanta\, then Texas and ending up in Chicago\, where she attended Northwestern University and received a Ph.D in Music Cognition. It was in Chicago that Davis became engrained within the local jazz and improvisatory music community\, one that is tight knit\, diverse and particularly open to each player’s musical inclinations. \nDavis’s Chicago experience was instrumental in her development as a player. Regularly hearing local greats\, like saxophonist Von Freeman\, guitarist Bobby Broom\, and pianist Ron Perrillo\, playing in wide ranging musical contexts and interdisciplinary collaborations helped to shape her into a well balanced and genre defying artist. Davis was also privy to a range of artists\, including one of her biggest influences\, the iconoclastic composer/conceptualist Steve Coleman. \nUpon her move to New York City in 2013\, Davis found herself as an outsider looking in. It was difficult to come from a place where she was established to an entirely different community\, especially one as fractious as New York’s. Though\, Davis soon showed that she was equal to its demands. \nThe roller coaster lifestyle of working as a professional musician in New York was challenging. Davis quickly saw that her days would have some career highpoints alongside humbling lows of everyday musician life. Friends like drummer Jay Sawyer helped her overcome her blues by coming along to sessions and gigs\, thus helping establishing herself in the scene. Soon\, Davis began to play more regularly with a diverse group of musicians\, including Matt Mitchell\, Greg Saunier\, Billy Kaye\, and Curt Sydnor. \nIt was about this time that Davis found out that her father had heart arrhythmia. The news prompted her to do detailed research on the physical aspects of the human heart. \nIt was with all of this in mind that Davis decided to compose this music\, using the heart for its emotional connotation or utilizing ventricular rhythms as metrical devices. Composing helped not only in her emotional transition but also focused her study on biological aspects of the body. Heart Tonic finds Davis employing more standard jazz elements than in the music of her previous work\, including formal harmonic changes and shifting meters. \nReleased by:\nSunnyside Records\nRelease date:\n23 March 2018 \nThe band will be Caroline on saxes\, Jay Sawyer on drums\, and John Tate on bass.
