SUMMARY:Alexis Lombre
DESCRIPTION:Alexis Lombre is a professional jazz pianist who is making her way onto the jazz scene. Raised on Chicago’s South Side\, she discovered early that the true essence of music is not only about what you hear but\, more importantly how music makes you feel. Consequently\, she believes that her musical mission is to keep the ‘Soul’ in music alive. \nBorn an ‘old soul’\, Alexis gravitated to the music played in her mother’s Kansas City childhood home. This music ranged from that of jazz greats Oscar Peterson\, Shirley Scott\, Stanley Turrentine\, Eddie Harris and Gene Ammons\, to Stevie Wonder\, Bill Withers\, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly\, The Dramatics\, Al Green and Parliament-Funkadelic. Alexis started classical piano lessons at age 10 but because of her attraction to the soulful sounds of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and pianist\, Gene Harris\, at age 12 she switched to jazz lessons studying with former Kansas City pianist\, Steve Million. At age 13\, Alexis began participating in the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s (JIC) training programs which emphasized the importance of learning jazz on the bandstand. She began attending JIC jam sessions and then at 15\, received the JIC Kiewit-Wang Mentorship Award to study privately with the legendary pianist\, Willie Pickens. Alexis’ training was complemented by attending summer jazz camps at Juilliard\, Centrum-Port Townsend and in Kansas City and Louisville. Throughout high school\, she participated in the Ravinia Jazz Mentors Program for Chicago Public School students\, a program which emphasized the importance of learning jazz from the elders. For 4 years\, twice a week she was instructed by Chicago’s top jazz musicians\, which again included Willie Pickens. Her relationship with Ravinia afforded her the opportunity to perform commissioned works with pianist and Ravinia CEO\, Welz Kaufmann as well as perform tributes to Ramsey Lewis. \nLearn more HERE! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Kasan Belgrave Quartet
DESCRIPTION:There will be two seatings at 7:30pm and 9:30pm for this performance. \n  \nMulti-woodwind-instrumentalist and Detroit native Kasan Belgrave holds a unique stance in the city as one of the young torchbearers of the Detroit jazz collective. His father\, the late maestro trumpeter Marcus Belgrave\, laid a foundation for him as he continues to carry on the legacy of Detroit jazz royalty. Following close to his father’s strides\, Kasan takes pride in contributing to Detroit’s rich pedigree of musical mentorship\, as he strives to continue passing down the knowledge and exposure of jazz music to generations after him. \nThe 23-yr-old is a recent graduate of University of Michigan\, and also currently holds a graduate assistantship under bassist Prof. Rodney Whitaker at Michigan State University. Belgrave has shared the stage with many greats such as Nicholas Payton\, Barry Harris\, Benny Green\, Rodney Whitaker\, Theo Crocker\, Robert Hurst\, Karriem Riggins\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, and the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra w/ Wynton Marsalis. \nKasan has performed around the globe. He attended a jazz summer clinic that his father ran at the University of California-Berkeley in 2011\, where he met flautist Elena Pinderhughes\, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire\, and Walter Smith III. He traveled to Barbados in 2013\, along with saxophonist Marcus Elliott and pianist Ian Finkelstein\, where they performed a masterclass and concert sponsored by the U.S. Embassy. He’s performed frequently at the Detroit Jazz Festival\, as a sideman for Wendell Harrison\, Rob Pipho\, Rick Margitza\, Nicholas Payton\, and Detroit bassist Ali Bey. \nIn 2017\, he performed a duet with the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin in her last ever live Detroit performance at the Music Hall. \nKasan will be releasing his debut album this summer\, but is prominently present showing his support for his musical peers throughout the major venues of the Detroit music scene.

SUMMARY:Christopher L. Wilson Trio
DESCRIPTION:There will be two separate seatings at 7:30pm & 9:30pm for this show. \n  \nThe enlightening and freeing sound of swing is what first attracted Christopher to jazz. His interest in this feeling is what led him to begin exploring Detroit’s rich musical history which was and is replete with musical legends. He first studied with the late greats Bess Bonnier and Marcus Belgrave. Later\, he would join the Detroit Symphony Jazz Orchestra’s Civic Jazz Program where he first met esteemed bassist and educator Rodney Whitaker. By the time Christopher graduated from high school\, he was entrenched in swing and bebop  \nand would go on to further his studies within the jazz program at Michigan State University. While at Michigan State\, he had the pleasure of studying and performing with Rodney Whitaker\, Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson\, Derrick Gardner\, Vincent Chandler\, Randy Gilespie\, Diego Rivera\, and Rick Roe. After graduating Christopher immediately began performing with his trio in Detroit\, including a weekly jam session at the heralded Baker’s Keyboard Lounge. A short year later\, Christopher relocated to sunny swingin’ Los Angeles where he fell in love with Southern California and spent nine years there as a result. During that time he played regularly with his trio and released two albums\, “Feelin’ Better” and most recently “Leaving Los Angeles” in August of 2019. Christopher moved to Chicago shortly after and is honored and excited to be part of another incredible city rich with musical history.  \nChristopher’s music is highly influenced by hard swing\, bebop\, and the rich history of jazz piano trios. His focus is the uplifting nature of swing and the beauty behind the jazz piano trio.  His arrangements are thoughtful and his music contagious.  \nThere are players who skate more\, players with more driving rhythms and more “original” versions. For listeners thirsty for “notes…like hoisted water/raveling off a bucket\,” for the generous lyricism that left the planet with Hank Jones and Tommy Flanagan\, Christopher Wilson is a reminder that our musical well is deep and fresh\, that a new generation of players can still lead us to it. —Michael Lauchlan\, author of Trumbull Ave
