DESCRIPTION:There will be two separate seatings for this performance at 7:30 pm and at 9:30 pm.  \nKris Kurzawa’s versatility has led him to become one of Detroit area’s most in demand guitarists since the early 2000’s; crossing multiple genres including jazz\, fusion\, rock\, world music and R+B. He released his first album ‘Sly’ in 2016 earning him his fifth Detroit Music Award. He earned his bachelors degree in 2003 and his masters degree in 2012 with a concentration in jazz studies from Wayne State University. Kris has over 20 years teaching experience and is the head of the guitar department at the Detroit Institute of Music Education and adjunct faculty in Wayne State Universities jazz studies program. Kris will be performing modern electric jazz infused with funk grooves and latin rhythms. He will be joined by John Barron on bass\, Dale Grisa on keyboards\, and Jesse Kramer on drums.

DESCRIPTION:There will be two seatings at 7:30pm & 9:30pm for this performance. \n  \nGerard Gibbs\, leader and producer of Gerard Gibbs & ORGANized Crime\, conceived the idea to form this group in order to both commemorate the teachings of his mentor\, the late Richard “Groove” Holmes\, and to fully embrace his love for the Hammond B-3 organ and the electric keyboards. He has been playing keyboards and organ for 35 years\, and attributes his accomplishments and overall musical development to the late organist as well as his father and mother\, and the many local and national musicians who worked\nwith him along the way. Gibbs currently leads this band\, and tours nationally and internationally playing piano\, keyboards and organ for saxophonist James Carter.

SUMMARY:Father's Day with The Alex Harding Organ Trio
DESCRIPTION:There will be two separate seatings for this performance at 7:30 pm and at 9:30 pm.  \nDetroit-born baritone saxophonist Alex Harding first became active in jazz circles in his youth. Early on he studied with established jazz figures Yusef Lateef and Beans Bowles and was playing gigs with Donald Byrd and Wynton Marsalis before he was out of high school. Throughout the ’90s\, 2000s\, and 2010s\, Harding toured\, performed\, and recorded without pause\, collaborating with countless names in both jazz and pop circles that included everyone from the Marshall Allen-led Sun Ra Arkestra to work with David Lee Roth. \nHarding was born in 1967 in Detroit\, Michigan. After hearing Grover Washington\, Jr. as a kid\, he took up tenor saxophone\, eventually switching over to baritone in high school. Though sax was his primary instrument\, he would occasionally double on bass clarinet. He was already performing regularly around Detroit in his teenage years while studying with local jazz greats. By his early twenties he was performing internationally. He left Detroit for New York in the early ’90s\, joining Julius Hemphill’s Saxophone Sextet and performing around town with Lester Bowie\, Frank Lacy\, Hamiet Bluiett’s Baritone Group\, the Mingus Big Band\, and many others. He also took part in shows and festival appearances with the Sun Ra Arkestra and the Roy Hargrove Big Band. He recorded multiple albums with longtime friend pianist Lucian Ban\, including 2002’s Somethin’ Holy and a 2008 collaboration between the two friends and Romanian electronic musician Silent Strike entitled 3am. In the late 2000s he joined the Broadway production of FELA!!! both in New York and on tour. He eventually returned to Detroit\, but stayed incredibly active in the studio and on the road. Harding and Ban reunited in 2019 for another collaborative album\, Dark Blue.

DESCRIPTION:Koji Cassetta is an up-and-coming Detroit-based bassist\, composer\, and teacher making his debut as a bandleader at Cliff Bell’s.  He’s bringing his talented group of young and accomplished musicians\, the Connection Collective\, for an exciting night of standards\, as well as original compositions. Koji Cassetta’s Connection Collective has roots in Detroit’s straight-ahead scene\, as well as funk\, r&b\, and Afro-Cuban traditions. He is a protégé of renowned bassists Rodney Whitaker\, and Jeff Pedraz\, and aspires to continue on and pay tribute to the tradition of the Detroit music scene and his mentors. He received his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies degree at Michigan State University\, and is currently receiving his master’s degree as well at Michigan State University as a teaching assistant.

SUMMARY:Irwin Hall Organ Trio
DESCRIPTION:There will be two separate seatings for this performance at 7:30pm & 9:30pm. \nIrwin got his start at the age of 9 when he won a lottery in school and was gifted an alto saxophone. By the age of 11 he was on stage performing professionally and began winning state and national competitions. Irwin attended Princeton University on a full ride to study East Asian philosophy. He learned Japanese and after graduating began work at a major Japanese newspaper in Tokyo. As fate would have it\, he ran into songstress Melody Gardot backstage at the Tokyo Jazz Festival who heard him play and immediately hired him to tour with her band. He quit his job and went on back-to-back international tours as her featured soloist. Soon after he caught the ear of 3x Grammy/Tony Award winning NEA Jazz Master Dee Dee Bridgewater and joined her working band\, honing his skills under the master vocalist on saxophone\, flute\, and bass clarinet.  \nalbum Star People Nation by trumpeter Theo Croker\, and he has toured extensively with Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn and bass virtuoso Charnett Moffett\, among many others. Irwin now leads two bands of his own\, the Irwin Hall Organ Trio and continues to perform in cities around the world including London\, Tokyo\, Shanghai\, Rio\, Prague\, New York\, Paris\, Melbourne\, and more. \nIrwin’s musical passions also extend into the classroom. He has taught privately and in classroom settings around the world\, including the US\, Japan\, Switzerland\, and China. His experience ranges from private instruction to group classes running clinics on improvisation\, music theory\, and woodwind performance. His international appearances include Waseda University in Tokyo\, Japan\, Happy-Go-Lucky Big Band in Hong Kong\, and the Scuola di Musica Modema in Lugano\, Switzerland\, etc. He has taught at several independent music and charter schools throughout the New York area and maintains a global private music education practice.  \nLearn more about his organ trio HERE!
