The group is spearheaded by Saxophonist James Hughes & trumpeter Jimmy Smith. The quintet formed in the autumn of 2012 with the purpose of promoting their brand of Detroit be-bop. Fresh tunes\, tight ensemble work\, intriguing solos\, and a band with personality and swing are among the group’s trademarks. \n“…inspired by the grand Motor City jazz scene of the 1950s and early ’60s\, these players update and extend that tradition with excellent writing\, arranging\, and playing for the 21st century.” \n-Thom Jurek\, allmusic.com \nThe Hughes/Smith Quintet has performed at several notable jazz clubs like The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe\, The Bop Stop\, Cliff Bell’s\, Jazz Cafe at Music Hall\, Motor City Wine\, Cadieux Cafe\, Black Lotus Brewery\, and sets at the Michigan Jazz Festival\, Experience Art Live Royal Oak Festival\, St Columban Concert Series\, and the Opportunity Detroit Concert Series. DESCRIPTION:David Alvarez III is a jazz drummer\, composer\, arranger\, and music educator based in the Metro-Detroit area. The drum set was introduced to him at the age of five\, growing up playing in church. At the age of nine\, he started to learn how to play Jazz through a summer program called The Arts League of Michigan. Afterward\, for eight years he furthered his studies of the art form through the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Youth Jazz Program\, learning from Professors and College mentors from both Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. He has graduated from the University of Michigan in 2017 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in Jazz Studies with Teacher Certification. Since then\, he went on tour with the Benny Green Trio and is a member of the Clayton Brothers Quintet\, led by bassist John Clayton and saxophonist Jeff Clayton. He currently freelances and teaches music in Southeast Michigan. \n

He has played and recorded with Marcus Belgrave\, Rodney Whitaker\, James Carter\, Shawn Wallace and Donald Walden\, and tours with Stevie Wonder. He has served as a jazz trumpet instructor at both Ohio State University and Michigan State University and is currently on the faculty at WSU. He landed a gig as a member of Teddy Harris’ New Breed BeBop Society at the age of 16\, and is now one of the brightest stars on the Detroit jazz scene. Adams earned a full scholarship to Kentucky State University\, where he majored in music education and performance.

DESCRIPTION:There will be two seatings at 7:30 & 9:30pm for this performance. \nRafael Statin aka Leafar is one of those rarest of multi-instrumentalist who can combine great passion\, intellectual discipline\, and a spiritual fire that is evocative of great artistic creativity. He has so far established himself as a remarkable composer and musician not defined by any one particular genre or style. Appearing as Leafar\, a pseudonym created by Rafael in order to further free his music and himself from the establishments of being boxed in only as a saxophonist. As Leafar he is unconstrained to completely utilize his experimental mind & soul. \nRafael Statin has had the greatest privilege of sharing the performance space among some of greatest creative artist and musicians on the scene today including the 7x grammy (4x emmy) awarded bassist Robert Hurst III\, jazz master Reggie Workman (bassist of John Coltrane & Art Blakey)\, drum legend Jeff “Tain” Watts\, NEA Jazz master Jimmy Owens\, Detroit Trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave\, Grammy awarded producer/ musician Kamau Kenyatta\, drummer/producer Greg Hutchinson\, and Detroit experimental hip-hop producer Sterling Toles to name a few. \nHailing from Detroit\, Michigan\, Rafael’s connection to music was jazz\, r&b & soul\, fostered from a musical family at an early age. His parents gave an immeasurable amount of time and energy to make sure could have the opportunity to go to decent schools often back and forth from suburban education to artist opportunities in the urban Detroit area that would eventually prove fruitful despite the metro Detroit challenges throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s. Rafael attended and graduated from prestigious institutions such as Detroit School of Arts\, Detroit Symphony Civic Jazz Orchestra\, and The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. In the midst of education Rafael often played with notable influences such as Robert Hurst Group (2011-current)\, Marcus Belgrave (Toledo Art Museum 2010)\, Vincent Chandler Septet (2009-2010)\, Jeff Tain Watts Drum Club (Detroit Jazz Festival 2011) and often appearances as a leader on the Detroit music scene since 2009.

DESCRIPTION:There will be two seatings at 7:30pm and 9:30pm for this performance. \nTonight’s lineup: \nMike Monford- Alto Sax \nRayse Biggs- Trumpet \nWilliam Hill- piano/keyboard \nMarion Hayden- bass \nAlex White- drums \nNative Detroiter Mike Monford got an early start on his love for music. It began at the age of four while constantly digging through his father’s jazz and R&B albums. His musical interests grew through his teen years when he absorbed himself in the hip-hop culture\, and morphed into DJing at parties under the name DJ M & M. The turning point came in high school when he explored singing\, but it was the saxophone that became his instrument of choice. \nMike immersed himself in private lessons with jazz legend Teddy Harris Jr.\, who also became his mentor\, and he took in the jazz scene at some of Detroit’s best-known jazz clubs – Bomacs Lounge\, Bert’s Market Place\, The Bluebird\, and Baker’s Keyboard Lounge. Along the way\, Mike’s mentors included resident masters Ken Cox\, George Goldsmith\, George Davidson\, Marcus Belgrave\, Donald Walden\, and Phil Lasley.  \nFresh out of high school in 1992\, Mike studied with master saxophonist Phil Lasley and also turned to his peers Dwight Adams\, Cassius Richmond\, Karriem Riggens\, Rodney Whittaker\, and James Carter. \n In 1997\, Mike was awarded a musical scholarship to the University of Hartford – Hartt School of Music. There\, he studied with jazz great and master saxophonist Jackie McLean. He also was awarded a musical scholarship from the Societie of the Culturally Concerned\, formerly known as the Bluebird Reunion\, based in Detroit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile studying at the Hartt School Conservatory\, Mike traveled to New York where he found and was hired by bassist Bill Lee (filmmaker Spike Lee’s father)\, pianist Marc Cary\, pianist Alan J. Palmer\, trumpeter Raymond Williams\, and bassist Hakim Jami. Not only did he perform with these greats\, he also recorded with them. Mike spent some 20 years in New York honing his talents\, and entrenched in the history and sounds of jazz. \nArmed with his experiences as a performer\, composer\, and arranger\, “Perseverance\,” Mike Monford’s debut CD as a band leader was released in 2012. The CD features Grammy Award winning pianist Marc Cary\, Tarus Mateen on bass\, Steve Williams on drums\, and Rayse Biggs on trumpet. \nLearn more about Mike here!

SUMMARY:Allen Dennard Trio
DESCRIPTION:Allen attended the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where he received a full ride from the university’s jazz department. From then on he obtained other pivotal opportunities that would further him in his music career. Allen has made three appearances as a sideman in the Detroit Jazz Festival\, one being with the great saxophonist Wendell Harrison (2015)\, one being with Detroit bassist Ali Bey (2017)\, and lastly with the Detroit Jazz Festival All-Star Alumini Band (2019). In January 2019 Allen was chosen by the Detroit MetroTimes as one of ten artist they thought would become famous in that year. Soon after that Allen was approached with many interview requests\, one being with Detroit Public Television/ PBS and the other being with Honeysuckle Magazine\, a New York City based magazine company. Aside from that Allen has worked with several artist from the Detroit Music Factory label\, such as Gayelynn Mckinney\, De’Sean Jones and Sean Dobbins. He has also worked with Detroit saxophonist David McMurray from the Blue Note record label. Adding to that\, Allen also got the opportunity to share the stage with New York based saxophonist J.D Allen\, who is with HighNote Records. \n  \nIn October 2018 Allen had the opportunity to work with famous R&B artist Ray J\, being a member of the pit orchestra in a play that Ray J was in. In the same year Allen was chosen to be in the horn section for the MC5 reunion in Detroit\, sharing the stage with musical icons such as Wayne Kramer. Following after that Allen went on to record on one of Alice Copper’s latest albums in 2019. Allen is a bandleader and has three of his own groups\, the Allen Dennard Trio\, the Allen Dennard Quartet and the Allen Dennard Quintet. All groups have been headliners in venues around Detroit\, Metro-Detroit and the entire state of Michigan\, such as Baker’s Keyboard Lounge\, Cliff Bell’s\, The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe\, Bert’s Marketplace\, The Blue Llama\, The Whisky Parlor\, etc. He has also been the headliner for several local festivals around Detroit\, such as “Jazzin at the Vanity”\, “Jazz on the Ave” and one of the more well known ones the “African World Festival” held at the Charles H. Wright Museum. The Allen Dennard Quartet has also traveled around the Midwest to areas such as Sylvania\, OH. Allen’s music is a mixture of jazz\, contemporary\, hip hop\, and funk. Allen still resides in Detroit\, focusing on furthering his musical career in the local\, national and international music scene.
