Kasan has worked with many greats in his young career such as the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin\, Wynton Marsalis & Jazz @ Lincoln Center\, Dee Bridgewater\, Karriem Riggins\, Theo Crocker\, Etienne Charles\, and many others; in his scholar years at University of Michigan he studied under Robert Hurst\, pianist Benny Green\, and Andrew Bishop\, then continued his studies at MSU under the direction of Diego Rivera and Rodney Whitaker. Deeply rooted in the tradition of Black American Music\, Kasan is also congruently involved in parallel domains of the strong techno scene in Detroit; he appeared on the track “On My Own” with Jon Dixon & Moodyman; he has also performed with Scott Grooves\, Carl Craig\, Shigeto\, and Kyle Hall. The second show starts seating at 9pm.\nTICKETS ON SALE NOW \nWSG: DJ Frank Raines ( Funk Night Records ) \nGhost Funk Orchestra is a true melting-pot\, combining elements of psych rock\, jazz\, and funk into a powerhouse live sound. Formed in 2016\, it’s the brainchild of composer/multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. Since joining Colemine Records in 2018\, Ghost Funk has released 4 critically lauded albums\, the most recent being 2024’s ‘A Trip To The Moon.’ The buzz around the band has opened doors for them to share stages with such heroes as Os Mutantes\, Monophonics\, Grace Potter\, and Marco Benevento. Their reputation as a can’t-miss band has also brought them to such legendary festivals as Telluride Jazz\, Treefort\, Montreal Jazz\, and Levitation. In the words of KUTX\, prepare yourself for a “stage-filling psych-soul affair.” \n\nEach song on Ghost Funk Orchestra’s 3rd album\, A New Kind of Love\, resonates like the soundtrack to a scene from an imaginary movie. The music could score a romantic drama\, an action thriller\, or a modern twist on a classic film noir. The spare\, cascading vocals accentuate the lush instrumental orchestrations composed\, performed\, arranged and produced by multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum\, whose latest brainchild was conceived and conceptualized during The Great Pause of 2020\, a time of tension\, bewilderment and isolation. Evoking the grooviness of an era which preceded his arrival on earth\, Applebaum draws upon sonic devices of mid-century exotica and the succinct but dense arranging style of the leaders of the pop orchestras which dominated the hit parades of the 60s and early 70s. He blends impressions of this bygone era with an expression of his actual experiences as a young filmmaker coming of age in the 21st century\, citing influences such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Antibalas. A New Kind of Love encompasses a reverence for the past without attempting to recreate it. \nIn the tradition of the “production forward” discographies of such record makers as David Axelrod and the Mizell Brothers\, it’s easy to visualize Applebaum as a “mad doctor” figure\, hunkered down in a studio channeling this musical representation of his inner world into the 12 compositions which make up A New Kind of Love. His writing stretches his psyche to explore a terrain in which to capture emotional notes of love going well\, love gone sour\, manifesting love songs based in ghostly affairs. While the studio is obviously a wondrous happy place of experimentation and creativity for Applebaum\, he’s a band guy too (having actually fronted punk outfit The Mad Doctors). Applebaum has the wherewithal to bring his dreamy material to the 10 piece all star Ghost Funk Orchestra\, leading them to breathe life into this sophisticated body of work which heralds the celebration of a new era for the group. Ghost Funk Orchestra will be touring in concert this summer and fall to celebrate the release of A New Kind of Love\, an album which is sure to stand the test of time. \n \nGhost Funk Orchestra began as bandleader Seth Applebaum’s lo-fi recording project in 2014. They have been playing as part of New York City’s psych-rock and soul scenes\, but have only just recently released their debut album\, A Song for Paul. Five years might seem like a long time from a band’s conception to the release of their debut album\, but A Song for Paul is clearly worth the wait. \nWhile Ghost Funk Orchestra and A Song for Paul is Applebaum’s project\, he uses nearly 20 musicians to realize his vision. The group consistently find the groove while successfully negotiating Applebaum’s detours into some combination of jazz/prog/psych rock that occurs in nearly every tune. \nA Song for Paul is dedicated to Applebaum’s grandfather\, Paul Anish\, whose love of music was a huge influence on young Seth. But the spirit of another great music lover/music maker hovers over A Song for Paul as well\, and that would be Isaac Hayes. \nThe Hayes connection is obvious in two specific songs. “Walk Like a Motherfucker”\, the first full track after a short album-opening introduction\, establishes the stoned 1970s funk feel that dominates the album. Although there are no backup singers telling vocalist Laura Gwynn to shut her mouth when she gets to that certain word. It seems likely Black Moses would have approved. And then\, of course\, another track is titled\, “Isaac Hayes”\, though it does not appear to be literally about Isaac Hayes

The second show starts seating at 9pm.\nDrey Skonie and The kLOUDs Band a.k.a. “Skonie and The kLOUDs” emphasis on the loud. Hailing from the motor city\, Detroit\, MI. Skonie and The kLOUDs are retro style band\, with a new flare. They call themselves the new\, old school. \nIn the past few years\, The kLOUDs Band has been shaking up the Detroit Music Scene making the industry take notice.  In 2023 Drey Skonie lead singer of the band won “Artist Of The Year” at Motown Museum’s Hitsville Next Amplify Sound Of Detroit singing competition. Then only a month later Skonie and The kLOUDS were also crowned winners of Masterpiece Sound Studios’ Cover Song Contest in honor of the late\, legendary Motown songwriter and producer Sylvia Moy with their captivating rendition of Moy’s classic Stevie Wonder Motown hit\, “I Was Made To Love Her”. During the competition\, Drey met Jackie Wilson’s daughter Brenda Wilson\, who was a judge for the competition. Brenda then knew from Drey’s showmanship\, that she wanted Drey to play her Dad. Fast forward Drey now plays Jackie Wilson in a TV series entitled “Higher And Higher” coming soon. \nThe latest album “Rolling Skone” is available on iTunes\, Spotify\, Amazon\, and more.  They have appeared on stages from The D to Los Angeles rocking crowds with a multifaceted soul\, funk\, RnB\, and techno sound. \nCurrently “Skonie and The kLOUDs” are recording live in the studio. Since the charismatic\nvocalist posted his first raw home videos of himself singing Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra classics to YouTube in 2007\, he has amassed over 5 million views worldwide for over 70 clips. \nBy increasingly popular demand\, the Michigan native has amassed hundreds of performances at jazz hotspots like Cliff Bell’s and a five year and counting residency at the Axis Lounge at the MGM Grand Detroit. He’s been compared to everyone from Frank and Buble to Dean Martin\, Mel Torme and Harry Connick\, Jr. – yet he’s evolved from being a stellar vocal interpreter to master storyteller and songwriter. \nCollaborating with his pianist Chris Codish\, Ben has written clever\, crafty tunes expressing every aspect of love\, deep heartfelt connections and the sheer joy of living life to the fullest in the sexiest\, naughtiest\, most sensual and playful way possible. The second show starts seating at 7pm.\n“Touch & Go is a superb record from a singer\, composer\, lyricist\, and arranger who deserves a wider audience. Tobocman’s originals are especially notable.”\n—Mark Stryker (Jazz From Detroit) \nWith her warm and flexible voice\, combined with impressive arranging and composing skills\, Susan Tobocman has been making a name for herself on the NYC jazz scene among audiences and musicians alike for over 20 years—performing\, recording\, and collaborating with some of the top players anywhere. She has toured extensively throughout Europe and the US\, and has also released numerous recordings\, including four as a leader on Japan’s eponymous Disk Union label. \nBorn in Detroit\, at 16 Tobocman won the National Scholastic Writing Award for Poetry\, then at 17 attended Columbia University to study the craft. Fast forward 15 years to when she decided to make the leap into the unknown (being a full-time musician)\,and the transition from poet to lyricist was a smooth one. While her first gig was touring with the renowned Tom Tom Club (Talking Heads sans David Byrne)\, she soon decided to take on jazz—a lifelong endeavor. Susan’s instincts were spot-on. She started writing tunes immediately\, connecting the dots between her gift for poetry\, early piano lessons\, and a childhood filled with music and art. Tobocman is now known for putting her own stamp on strikingly diverse material. Her newest release\, Touch & Go\, is most definitely not your typical jazz vocalist’s record. She wrote five of the 13 tracks\, in addition to all of the arrangements. Something else that sets Susan apart from other vocalists who compose is that she also writes instrumental music. As the late great Mark Murphy said about Tobocman\, “Susan sings and writes with a warm\, smooth delivery\, and a genuine feeling for the music.

Jones II is a native of Flint Mi.  Since 1989 he has worked professionally with various artists in the USA\, Japan\, and Turkey.  Roger discovered his musical abilities when he was a youngster at church.  His gospel background provided a spring board to his passion for playing jazz music.  The church Greater Holy Temple COGIC where his father is pastor\, was like a musical battle ground for young musicians.  Roger cites his non- gospel influences as Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Herbie Hancock\, and McCoy Tyner.  After graduating from high school\, Roger attended Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin Ohio.  While attending Oberlin\, Roger’s understanding and musicianship grew exponentially.  Many performance opportunities were afforded\, and his reputation grew.  Since this time\, Roger has performed and “sat in” with various musical icons associated with jazz and other musical styles.  Some of these individuals include Wynton Marsalis\, Joe Henderson\, Wallace Roney\, and JJ Johnson to name a few. \nRoger has developed into a cutting-edge band leader.  His band\, “Roger Jones & Higher Calling” is comprised of phenomenal musicians dedicated to inventing fresh and innovative ways to approach the execution of music.  Mixed with a soulful and modern approach\, the music of this band is innovative\, relevant to the current generation\, and swings ridiculously hard.  There is no doubt that Roger L. Jones II will be heralded as one of the most explosive and innovative pianists of his generation.

Whether it’s rhythm and blues\, pop\, soul\, jazz or Motown\, Parham has explored a huge variety of sounds and styles throughout his storied career. He’s always been able to keep an open mind\, which allowed him to further expand his reach and strike up fruitful partnerships with other great musicians overtime. His studio output and live music work have been astounding and consistent in terms of quality\, and he has been incredibly busy crafting quality music\, even in recent years. \nDuane Parham\, a prolific artist with so much still left to give\, has built a very significant legacy on Detroit’s music and beyond with a broad selection of acclaimed albums\, singles\, and recording projects over the years. His musical heritage of passing down the knowledge and exposure of Detroit music to the youth; like his father\, late trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. Kasan has worked with many greats in his young career such as the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin\, Wynton Marsalis & Jazz @ Lincoln Center\, Dee Bridgewater\, Karriem Riggins\, Theo Crocker\, Etienne Charles\, and many others; in his scholar years at University of Michigan he studied under Robert Hurst\, pianist Benny Green\, and Andrew Bishop\, then continued his studies at MSU under the direction of Diego Rivera and Rodney Whitaker. Deeply rooted in the tradition of Black American Music\, Kasan is also congruently involved in parallel domains of the strong techno scene in Detroit; he appeared on the track “On My Own” with Jon Dixon & Moodyman; he has also performed with Scott Grooves\, Carl Craig\, Shigeto\, and Kyle Hall. The second show starts seating at 9pm.\nFeaturing:\nMarcus Elliot\, sax\nMichael Malis\, piano\nJon Taylor\, drums\nBen Rolston\, bass\nBrooklyn based bassist / composer Ben Rolston is an accomplished and compelling performer in an eclectic range of musical styles. Ben has performed with important musical voices like Marcus Belgrave\, Laurence Hobgood (Kurt Elling)\, Tim Ries (Rolling Stones)\, Dwight Adams (Stevie Wonder)\, and Nick Dunston. Ben has also performed at some of the finest venues and festivals in the country\, e.g. The Detroit Jazz Festival\, The Newport Jazz Festival\, The Ambria Jazz Festival\, Birdland\, The Stone\, The Green Mill\, Jazz at the Bistro\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Llama\, and The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe. \nBorn in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Ben’s young musical curiosity and talent were honed by the teachers and musical culture of Ann Arbor and Detroit\, leading to his matriculation at The University of Michigan to study with master musicians such as Robert Hurst and Geri Allen. Immediately after graduating in 2012\, Ben released his debut album Fables. It features 10 original compositions and was described as “full of grandeur and dissonance” and “find of the week” by Dave Sumner (eMusic Contributor). Shortly after the album release Ben was one of sixteen young jazz musicians from around the country handpicked to be a part of Ravinia’s Steans Institute Program for Jazz (Chicago). While at the Institute Ben had the privilege to study with jazz legends Rufus Reid\, Curtis Fuller\, David Baker and Nathan Davis. \nMoving to Detroit after graduation sparked a period of intense growth and musical activity. A talented and close-knit peer group led to established bands\, regular gigs\, a flurry of recordings\, and the founding of Polyfold Musical Arts Collective\, a non-profit musicians advocacy group. Some of the most fruitful work came from Rolston’s relationship with Marcus Elliot and Michael Malis\, who together are described in Mark Stryker’s book Jazz From Detroit as “among the most compelling Detroit jazz musicians of their generation.” \nDuring this time Ben was also touring the country with The Appleseed Collective\, an Americana band playing bluegrass\, western swing\, and jazz manouche influenced original music. In 2016 the Alex Levine Quartet\, of which Rolston is a long term member\, participated in a month-long residency program in Switzerland through the UNCOOL Festival. This has led to 3 records\, 3 tours in Europe\, and a short film about collaboration between American and Italian musicians. Fabian Almazan. \nSince moving to NYC in 2017 Rolston has presented three new bands: Brasfas (a small brass band influenced by Balkan Music and Ornette Coleman)\, Quartet Quartet (an improvisational adaptation of Philip Glass string quartet no. 5)\, and Qualia Quartet (modern jazz featuring Oud). He performed in the premiere of Nick Dunston’s La Operacion at Roulette Intermedium\, and has maintained a monthly concert series with Polyfold featuring some of the best improvisers NY has to offer.

The second show starts seating at 9pm.\nFeaturing:\nMarcus Elliot\, sax\nMichael Malis\, piano\nJon Taylor\, drums\nBen Rolston\, bass\nBrooklyn based bassist / composer Ben Rolston is an accomplished and compelling performer in an eclectic range of musical styles. Ben has performed with important musical voices like Marcus Belgrave\, Laurence Hobgood (Kurt Elling)\, Tim Ries (Rolling Stones)\, Dwight Adams (Stevie Wonder)\, and Nick Dunston. Ben has also performed at some of the finest venues and festivals in the country\, e.g. The Detroit Jazz Festival\, The Newport Jazz Festival\, The Ambria Jazz Festival\, Birdland\, The Stone\, The Green Mill\, Jazz at the Bistro\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Llama\, and The Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe. \nBorn in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, Ben’s young musical curiosity and talent were honed by the teachers and musical culture of Ann Arbor and Detroit\, leading to his matriculation at The University of Michigan to study with master musicians such as Robert Hurst and Geri Allen. Immediately after graduating in 2012\, Ben released his debut album Fables. It features 10 original compositions and was described as “full of grandeur and dissonance” and “find of the week” by Dave Sumner (eMusic Contributor). Shortly after the album release Ben was one of sixteen young jazz musicians from around the country handpicked to be a part of Ravinia’s Steans Institute Program for Jazz (Chicago). While at the Institute Ben had the privilege to study with jazz legends Rufus Reid\, Curtis Fuller\, David Baker and Nathan Davis. \nMoving to Detroit after graduation sparked a period of intense growth and musical activity. A talented and close-knit peer group led to established bands\, regular gigs\, a flurry of recordings\, and the founding of Polyfold Musical Arts Collective\, a non-profit musicians advocacy group. Some of the most fruitful work came from Rolston’s relationship with Marcus Elliot and Michael Malis\, who together are described in Mark Stryker’s book Jazz From Detroit as “among the most compelling Detroit jazz musicians of their generation.” \nDuring this time Ben was also touring the country with The Appleseed Collective\, an Americana band playing bluegrass\, western swing\, and jazz manouche influenced original music. In 2016 the Alex Levine Quartet\, of which Rolston is a long term member\, participated in a month-long residency program in Switzerland through the UNCOOL Festival. This has led to 3 records\, 3 tours in Europe\, and a short film about collaboration between American and Italian musicians.
