SUMMARY:Ragtime Banjo Revival Trio and Session
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES ARE AT 7:30PM & 9:30PM FOR THIS PERFORMANCE. Doors open at 5pm for dinner. Seating begins at 6pm for “Dinner & a Show”. The second show starts seating at 9pm.\nOpen Trad Jazz Jam at 9:30pm!  \nRagtime Banjo Revival (RBR) is a bold cultural outreach project that aims to grow and strengthen community through live and recorded experiences of historical popular music. RBR revives the joy of ragtime banjo music by illuminating its presence in our shared musical past — and by answering the question most people\, in and outside of music circles\, haven’t lately thought to ask: Why ragtime\, and why now? \nThe answer lies in the very sounds and stories of this project. Despite its trajectory from the most popular music in the English-speaking world to near-fatal obscurity\, this music\, its creators\, and its history live on today in our relationships with music\, popular culture\, identity\, and history. While audiences tap and hum along with the project’s inspired arrangements\, they’ll learn enough to change the way they listen to music and the way they engage with the development of culture. With a curious and optimistic spirit\, RBR educates and inspires\, welcoming the newcomer and cultivating respect across areas of difference.

SUMMARY:Susan Tobocman
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes are at 7:30p & 9:30p for this performance. Doors open at 5pm for dinner. Seating begins at 6pm for “Dinner & a Show”. The second show starts seating at 9pm.\n“Touch & Go is a superb record from a singer\, composer\, lyricist\, and arranger who deserves a wider audience. Tobocman’s originals are especially notable.”\n—Mark Stryker (Jazz From Detroit) \nWith her warm and flexible voice\, combined with impressive arranging and composing skills\, Susan Tobocman has been making a name for herself on the NYC jazz scene among audiences and musicians alike for over 20 years—performing\, recording\, and collaborating with some of the top players anywhere. She has toured extensively throughout Europe and the US\, and has also released numerous recordings\, including four as a leader on Japan’s eponymous Disk Union label. \nBorn in Detroit\, at 16 Tobocman won the National Scholastic Writing Award for Poetry\, then at 17 attended Columbia University to study the craft. Fast forward 15 years to when she decided to make the leap into the unknown (being a full-time musician)\,and the transition from poet to lyricist was a smooth one. While her first gig was touring with the renowned Tom Tom Club (Talking Heads sans David Byrne)\, she soon decided to take on jazz—a lifelong endeavor. Susan’s instincts were spot-on. She started writing tunes immediately\, connecting the dots between her gift for poetry\, early piano lessons\, and a childhood filled with music and art. Tobocman is now known for putting her own stamp on strikingly diverse material. Her newest release\, Touch & Go\, is most definitely not your typical jazz vocalist’s record. She wrote five of the 13 tracks\, in addition to all of the arrangements. Something else that sets Susan apart from other vocalists who compose is that she also writes instrumental music. As the late great Mark Murphy said about Tobocman\, “Susan sings and writes with a warm\, smooth delivery\, and a genuine feeling for the music.

DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES ARE AT 5:30PM & 7:30PM FOR THIS PERFORMANCE. Doors open at 4pm for dinner. Seating begins at 5pm for “Dinner & a Show”. The second show starts seating at 7pm.\nFeaturing:\n\nTano Brock\, clarinet\nMavrothi Kontanis\, oud \nFelicia Goldberg\, trombone\n\nTano Brock\, a native of San Francisco\, California\, was introduced to the world of music at an early age. Growing up\, he attended various music camps and festivals throughout California with his family\, where he was exposed to diverse global sounds. It was Turkish and Middle Eastern music that particularly captivated him\, especially the percussion\, which inspired him to begin studying the darbuka. \nAs a teenager\, Tano expanded his musical repertoire to include woodwinds\, piano\, and guitar\, ultimately honing in on the saxophone and clarinet as his primary instruments. His passion for folk music from the Balkans\, Turkey\, and Greece led him to travel extensively to deepen his understanding of the region’s rich musical traditions. During his travels\, he studied under renowned masters like Bekos Beko (Kočani Orkestar) in Macedonia\, Zhani Struga in Albania\, and Burakcan Güneren in Turkey. \nWhile studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston\, Tano founded Sarma Brass Band\, which he continues to lead. It was at Berklee where he also had the privilege of collaborating with an array of international musicians\, including Panos Aivas (Greece)\, Tamara Jokić (Serbia)\, and Han Beyli (Azerbaijan). Over the years\, Tano has shared the stage with legendary clarinetists such as Hüsnü Şenlendirici\, Ismail Lumanovski\, and Sal Mamudoski. \nNow based in Los Angeles\, Tano works as a music producer and mix engineer\, while regularly performing with several groups\, including Inspector Gagje brass band. His unique blend of global influences and knowledge of diverse instruments continues to shape his ever-evolving musical journey. \nMavrothi Kontanis is an eternal student of music on a range of instruments and voice\, focused especially on the older music of Greece and the Near East. Based in the US but with roots in Halkidiki\, Greece\, he is known better as a singer in some circles or a teacher in others\, but feels most at home crafting a melody with an oud in his hands.  \nDetroit native\, Felicia Goldberg has spent her life studying all genres of music\, specifically traditional music from the Balkans from a young age. She grew up playing violin and percussion\, then landed on trombone as her primary instrument. She studied trombone at Wayne State University\, but her love of Balkan music brought her to study in Macedonia and Serbia in 2019. Her original project\, known as “falooshh”\, draws influence from many genres\, but she is excited to bring it back to her musical roots with this incredibly talented trio!

SUMMARY:Dave Bennett
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES ARE AT 7:30PM & 9:30PM FOR THIS PERFORMANCE.\nDoors open at 5pm for dinner. Seating begins at 6pm for “Dinner & a Show”. The second show starts seating at 9pm.\n“Bennett is a player superbly well balanced between purity and power.  Bennett injects three heady shots of adrenalin that bring the music sharply to life.” \n\nDownbeat Magazine\n\nDave Bennett doesn’t fit the mold. \nFor starters\, you don’t find many jazz clarinet players who name Alice Cooper\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, and Chris Isaak among their influences. You won’t find many musicians who are equally conversant with the music of Benny Goodman (the “King of Swing”) and Roy Orbison (“The Soul of Rock and Roll”). In fact\, you may not find even one other clarinet virtuoso who breaks from his Swing Era repertoire to sing rockabilly hits while accompanying himself at the piano or electric guitar. \nDave began his national touring career at the age of 14. He has been a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall with The New York Pops (2013) and has been featured with 35 other US and Canadian orchestras including Nashville\, Houston\, Detroit\, Rochester\, Omaha\, Toronto\, Calgary\, Vancouver\, Orlando\, San Antonio\, Jacksonville\, Portland\, OR and Portland\, ME.  Some of his annual appearances include The Elkhart Jazz Festival\, The Suncoast Classic Jazz Festival\, The Arizona Classic Jazz Festival\, The Sacramento Hot Jazz Jubilee\, The Clambake Music Festival\, and The Redwood Coast Music Festival. \nDave has been featured on NPR Radio’s “Jazz at Riverwalk.”  He made his European debut in 2008 at The Bern Jazz Festival (Switzerland) in a combo with jazz legends and Benny Goodman alumni guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and vibraphonist Peter Appleyard.  He has also shared the stage with Ken Peplowski\, Byron Stripling\, Marcus Printup\, Aaron Diehl\, and Bria Skonberg. \nHe has been featured soloist on several jazz cruises\, performing with Harry Allen\, Warren Vache\, Allan Vache\, Banu Gibson\, and Tardo Hammer. \nDave is a recording artist on jazz label Mack Avenue Records. His second release\, Blood Moon reached No. 24 on the Billboard Jazz charts in 2018. \nIn March 2022\, Dave and his band performed to a sold-out audience at New York City’s Birdland Theater. \nDuring the isolation of the pandemic\, fate steered Dave’s time off the road into a bold new direction. He put his guitar pedal to the metal and stepped away from his beloved clarinet. A songwriter stepped forward.  Road songs\, reverb-laded guitar solos that could power a surf documentary\, and memories of loves and lives lost are the mile markers that makeup his latest release “Nowhere Fast”.  His first full-length rock album is a deep\, soul-searching joyride through the back streets of his mind. \nDave has recently joined forces with guitarist/vocalist/pastor Tom Hampton for Dave’s first gospel project.  Release is planned for late 2024.

DESCRIPTION:There will be two separate seatings at 7:30pm & 9:30pm for this performance.\nDoors open at 5pm for dinner. Seating begins at 6pm for “Dinner & a Show”. The second show starts seating at 9pm.\nAn early devote of traditional American guitar styles\, Nick Schillace began studying fingerpicking techniques at the Augusta Heritage Workshop in West Virginia with artists including John Jackson\, John Cephas\, Steve James\, Roy Book Binder\, Del Ray\, and many others shortly after picking up a guitar in 1984. \nNick spent a decade adapting these techniques to acoustic and electric guitar\, and later banjo\, before entering the music program at Wayne State University\, ultimately earning a masters degree with a focus on 20th Century American music identity. \nCentering his research on the late guitarist and composer John Fahey\, Nick explored the intersection of folk and vernacular influences and how these influences develop into a cultivated style for artists. This research still informs the way he approaches his own music\, as well as his work as an educator via Orion Music Studio and Detroit Folk Workshop. \nInterested parties can download the PDF file of the thesis here. Please note: the file for the final version was lost many years ago so this version may have grammatical and spelling type errors. \nIn demand as a soloist as well as an ensemble player\, Nick works in a variety of collaborations\, most notably Lac La Belle\, with his wife Jennie Knaggs\, and the traditional jazz ensemble Post Imperial Jazz Band. He has recorded several albums as a soloist and in ensembles and has made several tours of the US and Europe.

With paths lit only by the moonlight reflected on the shimmering snow\, four musicians emerged from behind the curtain of ice-laden branches.\nNot a word was spoken as the accordion began to groan\, and wheeze its way into unusual melodics. The ground began to tremble as the resonant thrum of tuba and contrabass lurched into rhythm. Cascading and wild like the glitter blowing in the wind\, tumbling lines spill forth from an old guitar steam-shipped from Europe\, and the banjo bought off an old man from the moors.\nAs the band spins into captivating and beguiling harmony\, an echoing howl rises up from the distance\, and rises up from within\, as the banshee herself shrieks and warbles the words that have been long since forgotten\, recalled on this night for one and for all.\nWe sing to you the songs of yore\, the songs that tickle\, transport\, and bemuse. We’re lost in the sounds we love to dive into and we’d love for you to come along too.\nWelcome to the Theatre of The North.

SUMMARY:Kasan Belgrave Quintet
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES ARE AT 7:30PM & 9:30PM FOR THIS PERFORMANCE. Doors open at 5pm for dinner. Seating begins at 6pm for “Dinner & a Show”. The second show starts seating at 9pm.\nSaxophonist Kasan Belgrave is a ascending talent newly emerging in the role of a compositional leader. His energetic playing style and improvisational finesse derives from influences of early bebop and jazz\, as well flares of fusion and gospel. His musical prowess has more recently been shown through new innovative compositions. \nThe record “Dual Citizen” is an introductory reflection of Kasan’s own consciousness through experience of musical nurturing & professional practice from the Detroit jazz mentorship empire\, led by his father\, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave. It provides a glimpse of Kasan’s endless curiousness of sonic ingenuity. \nIn the formative years of his career\, that same mentorship was present in the musical institutions\, as he studied with Andrew Bishop\, Benny Green\, and Robert Hurst at the University of Michigan then held an assistantship under the direction of Diego Rivera and Rodney Whitaker at Michigan State University. \nKasan has toured as a multi-woodwind instrumentalist with Jazz @ Lincoln Center w/ Wynton Marsalis\, performed in multiple residencies curated by Terri Lynn Carrington\, performed with Karriem Riggins\, and Etienne Charles. The 27-year-old multi-woodwind instrumentalist has also made rounds performing in every corner of the Detroit music scene\, immersing himself in Latin\, R&B\, and techno. \nBelgrave is just one of many who was nurtured in the realm. The lineup for “Dual Citizen” might be the most outright product of that very circle of mentorship. Bassist Jonathan Muir-Cotton\, finishing his degree at MSU\, is currently rotating in Christian Sands Trio; Louis Jones aka “WavyLou”\, a gun-slinging drummer who has the likes of the Haynes’ and Roach’s\, recently hit with ELEW and Johnny O’Neal in Detroit; Brendon Davis\, a virtuosic voice on piano shortly studying with the great Chick Corea\, is established in composition and arranging of the gospel scene ; the enigmatic Allen Dennard has a trailblazing trumpet sound\, recently sharing stages with Dwele and Mike Phillips; and Michael Abbo\, the genial menace on both trombone and bass\, recently played with Johnny Oneal and Dafnis Prieto. The close fellowship of this group is a sentiment to the power of their sound as the Kasan Belgrave Sextet.
