SUMMARY:Allen Dennard
DESCRIPTION:Showtimes are at 5:30p & 7:30p for this performance. Doors open at 4:30pm for dinner. Seating begins at 5pm for “Dinner & a Show”. The second show starts seating at 7pm.\nTrumpeter Allen Dennard has one foot firmly planted in the classic jazz canon. The 2016 graduate of the University of Michigan’s School of Music\, Theatre & Dance leads his own rotating jazz ensemble while also regularly playing with the likes of Detroit legends Marion Hayden\, Wendell Harrison\, and David McMurray. This April saw his first release Stepping In\, which evokes the sounds of Miles Davis’ classic quintet. \nThat said\, he’s not just a strict jazz classicist. His other foot is firmly planted in the melting pot that is the Detroit music scene. Dennard also sits in and records with acts ranging from hip-hop (Kulture) to rock ‘n’ roll (the MC5’s “MC50” 50th anniversary tour)\, blues (Robert Bradley)\, soul (Ray J)\, and gospel (J. Drew Sheard II). \nDennard comes from a musical family: His aunt Elreta Dodds played bass clarinet with the ’70s avant-garde jazz ensemble Griot Galaxy. His father sings\, his mother used to play the trumpet and piano\, and his older sister played clarinet. But Dennard says he got his start on trumpet on accident. “In 5th grade I wanted to play trombone\, but my school didn’t have enough\,” he says. “I thought that trumpet was the next best thing. From then on I just never put it down.” \nIt also helps that Detroit has an amazing legacy of mentorship within the jazz community. Dennard praises his first teacher\, jazz flutist Deblon Jackson\, for starting him off with ear training before diving into music theory. He also praises trumpeters John Douglas\, Dwight Adams\, and Rayce Biggs for helping him learn his instrument. \nBut Dennard’s biggest mentor was none other than Marcus Belgrave\, the jazz icon who died in 2015. Dennard says that connection was forged thanks to his aunt\, who was best friends with the pianist Geri Allen\, who set up Dennard’s first lesson with Marcus when he was in high school. \nIt wound up being a crucial connection. “At U of M he saved my career\,” Dennard says. When Dennard was first given his trumpet\, there was no one to teach him the correct way to play\, so he found his own way to do it. But by the time he got to college\, he found out that his embouchure\, or how the mouth is applied to the mouthpiece\, was no longer working for him.\n“That way got me really far — it got me a scholarship to U of M\,” Dennard says. “But in college my notes started cracking and I couldn’t hold a note.” Dennard compares it to being “as bad as breaking your leg if you just got there on a basketball scholarship.” He almost quit.\nAt a U-M master class\, Marcus could tell Denard was struggling\, and took him aside for private home lessons for more than a year. “He kind of sensei-ed me through\,” Dennard says. \nNow\, Dennard says he’s inspired by artists like Houston singer\, pianist\, and producer Robert Glasper. “For me personally\, Robert Glasper created this new wave of jazz that’s similar to ’70s jazz fusion\,” Dennard says. “Hip-hop evolved into other things\, and he put that in his music and created a whole new wave of other artists doing it. It’s common around Detroit.”\nDennard says he just calls it “modern music.” “I love it\,” he says. “I think it’s good for the evolution of music. Everything’s always changing — politics\, life\, all that. Music should too.” \nby Doug Coombe January 02\, 2019 Detroit Metro Times \nhttps://m.metrotimes.com/detroit/allen-dennard-takes-jazz-into-the-future/Content?oid=19038380

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis
DESCRIPTION:From Caroline Davis’s “Heart Tonic” (3/23/18) on Sunnyside Records.\nFor the past four years\, saxophonist/composer Caroline Davis has been tied up in matters of the heart. Her focus is multi-tiered\, however. There are the metaphorical facets\, including her feelings about her recent relocation to New York from her longtime home in Chicago and the emotional rigors of navigating the path of an itinerant musician within the City’s bustling jazz scene. There is also a more physiological aspect\, as Davis has actively researched the life giving organ and its properties in dealing with her father’s own heart ailment. All of these forces come to bear on her new recording\, Heart Tonic. \nBorn in Singapore to a Swedish mother and British father\, Davis grew up in the United States from the age of six\, settling first in Atlanta\, then Texas and ending up in Chicago\, where she attended Northwestern University and received a Ph.D in Music Cognition. It was in Chicago that Davis became engrained within the local jazz and improvisatory music community\, one that is tight knit\, diverse and particularly open to each player’s musical inclinations. \nDavis’s Chicago experience was instrumental in her development as a player. Regularly hearing local greats\, like saxophonist Von Freeman\, guitarist Bobby Broom\, and pianist Ron Perrillo\, playing in wide ranging musical contexts and interdisciplinary collaborations helped to shape her into a well balanced and genre defying artist. Davis was also privy to a range of artists\, including one of her biggest influences\, the iconoclastic composer/conceptualist Steve Coleman. \nUpon her move to New York City in 2013\, Davis found herself as an outsider looking in. It was difficult to come from a place where she was established to an entirely different community\, especially one as fractious as New York’s. Though\, Davis soon showed that she was equal to its demands. \nThe roller coaster lifestyle of working as a professional musician in New York was challenging. Davis quickly saw that her days would have some career highpoints alongside humbling lows of everyday musician life. Friends like drummer Jay Sawyer helped her overcome her blues by coming along to sessions and gigs\, thus helping establishing herself in the scene. Soon\, Davis began to play more regularly with a diverse group of musicians\, including Matt Mitchell\, Greg Saunier\, Billy Kaye\, and Curt Sydnor. \nIt was about this time that Davis found out that her father had heart arrhythmia. The news prompted her to do detailed research on the physical aspects of the human heart. \nIt was with all of this in mind that Davis decided to compose this music\, using the heart for its emotional connotation or utilizing ventricular rhythms as metrical devices. Composing helped not only in her emotional transition but also focused her study on biological aspects of the body. Heart Tonic finds Davis employing more standard jazz elements than in the music of her previous work\, including formal harmonic changes and shifting meters. \nReleased by:\nSunnyside Records\nRelease date:\n23 March 2018 \nThe band will be Caroline on saxes\, Jay Sawyer on drums\, and John Tate on bass.

SUMMARY:Alexis Lombre
DESCRIPTION:Alexis is a young jazz pianist who discovered that the true essence of music is not just about what you hear but how music makes you early feel. Her musical mission is to keep the ‘Soul’ in music alive. The recent release of her debut album\, Southside Sounds\, does just that\, as it is a soulful reflection of her upbringing on Chicago’s Southside. \nDue to the WSU Jazz recital\, Alexis will start at nine pm on this night. The last set many great young players sit-in with her band!

SUMMARY:Owen Broder & Cowboys & Frenchmen
DESCRIPTION:Owen Broder – saxophones\nEthan Helm – saxophones\nChris Ziemba – piano\nEthan O’Reilly – bass\nMatt Honor – drums \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCowboys & Frenchmen is a new take on instrumentation\, orchestration\, and composition for the jazz quintet. The front line of two alto saxophones is the vehicle for reimagining the role of horns in a small group setting\, charting new territory by exploring individuality within homogeneity. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe New York City-based quintet is releasing its second album\, Bluer Than You Think\, in October 2017 on Outside In Music. Their first release\, Rodeo (Outside In Music\, 2015)\, garnered terrific reviews and enjoyed top placement on radio charts. The release of Rodeo was celebrated at Joe’s Pub\, one of New York’s most respected venues for creative music. Cowboys & Frenchmen was a featured presenter at the 2016 North American Saxophone Alliance Conference\, which served as the centerpiece for a performance and educational tour through Texas. They performed at the D.C. Jazz Festival in 2016 as finalists in the inaugural D.C. JazzPrix Competition\, and again in 2017 as a featured artist. They were also selected to perform at Umbria Jazz Festival’s 2017 Conad Jazz Contest. \nThe inspiration for our band name\, Cowboys & Frenchmen\, is a short film by David Lynch\, called The Cowboy and The Frenchmen. The film is a Western – but a “Lynchian” Western. Like many of his films\, it is his unique\, out-there interpretation of a classic genre. Similarly\, a lot of our music has one foot firmly planted in a genre\, while the other one is busy trying to kick down the genre’s door. \n\n\n\n\n\n

This exquisite and continuously gripping record is a testament to Cortiñas’ triple threat of skills as dynamic performer\, agile bandleader and brilliant composer.” (Hrayr Attarian\, Chicago Jazz Magazine). \nhttp://www.gustavocortinasmusic.com/html/
