The DJ7 (Detroit Jazz Septet) concentrates on the music of Duke Ellington’s Small Groups as well as original material contributed by bassist John Barron and some other era-appropriate numbers.
From 1956 and into the early ’60’s, master pianist/composer/arranger Duke Ellington recorded small group sessions with his star soloists such as Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves & Clark Terry as well as the celebrated tenor saxophone virtuoso Coleman Hawkins. Duke’s great collaborator Billy Staryhorn contributed compositions, arrangements and even played piano on some of these recordings.
This ensemble will also do small group arrangements from classic 60’s recordings by Duke like Blues in Orbit and selections from the soundtrack to the Otto Preminger film staring Jimmy Stewart, Anatomy of a Murder.
Bassist John Barron will contribute original compositions in the Ellington vein of that era.
The band will include: RJ Spangler (drums/leader), James O’Donnell (trumpet), John “Tbone” Paxton (trombone), Michael Zaporski (piano), Goode Wyche III (saxes), Jim Holden (saxes, cl) and John Barron (string bass/composer).
