Visionary Detroit saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, De’Sean Jones has already done more in his 20s than most musicians hope to accomplish by age 50.

His music combines the new and the classic sides of jazz which includes Funk, Hip Hop, Bebop and Soul. All tastefully worked in. After participating in the DSO’s Civic Jazz program and graduating from Detroit’s High School for the Performing Arts, Jones studied at Michigan State under Rodney Whitaker. He then attended the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

His mentors include the great trumpeter/educator, Marcus Belgrave and the late, highly regarded Detroit saxophonist, Donald Walden. He also mentored with electronic music pioneer Mike Banks, creator of Detroit’s world-renowned Underground Resistance, who he’s played with for several years now.
Jones said, “I feel very fortunate and blessed. This city’s mentorship extends beyond the music. They give advice on life matters; they’re life coaches. When I’m out there playing, I’m actually representing all of the people who have endorsed me.”

Mike Mitchell aka Blaque Dynamite began playing the drums at the early age of 2. Since then, he has learned to adapt to many styles of music, has studied theory intensely as well as practiced 16,862 hours! He was formally introduced to jazz at the age of 14, which spurred his passion for the genre. By the age of 17, he had performed/toured with Kamasi Washington, Chrisette Michele, Derrick Hodge, Gerald Clayton, Antonio Hart, Spirit Fingers (formerly known as The Polyrhythmics), Seven Davis Jr., The New World Order, and the legendary Stanley Clarke.

The Gabriel Brass Band is a family tradition that has been passed down for six generations. Beginning with patriarch Narcisse Gabriel, a bass player whom migrated to New Orleans from Santo Domingo in 1856.
Cousins Dameon Gabriel (trumpet), Larry Gabriel (banjo and grand marshal), Marcel Gabriel (bass drum), Darryl Johnson (grand marshal), and a few friends have picked up the baton, continuing the exciting fun-filled brass band second line tradition in the metro Detroit area.
The Gabriel Brass Band honors rich history of New Orleans music while delivering a joyful sound that excites the modern ear.
This Motor City music family maintains a living connection to New Orleans family members Charlie Gabriel (Preservation Hall Jazz Band) and Louis Ford maintaining our roots back home in the Crescent City as they all move musically into the future.

Frisson (n.) a sensation typically expressed as an overwhelming emotional response combined with goosebumps; a sudden strong feeling of excitement or fear; a thrill
Formed in 2015 at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, Frisson is a collective of musicians from across the United States, Caribbean, and Europe. With influences ranging from jazz and samba to funk and electronic music, the band’s live performances feature exhilarating improvisation, hypnotic grooves, and a high level of audience engagement. Frisson released its debut EP in 2017 and has since toured the material across the United States West Coast, Midwest and Western Canada. In 2019 they will release their second studio album and tour extensively both domestically and internationally.

Personnel: Nathan Rice (Sax), Giveton Gellin (Tpt), Matt DiBiase (Vibes), Emmett Sher (Guitar), Michael Orenstein (Keys), Eli Hath (Bass), Chase Kuesel (Drums), Pat Graney (Percussion)
“Ohio-based Frisson has the chops to be the next big thing in an emerging music style that incorporates jazz, hip hop, samba and electronic music.”
-Lyle Rebbeck, Medicine Hat News
“An appealing new voice on the jazz scene with beautiful melodic sensitivity and intricately crafted percussion”
-Marshall Smith, The Idyllwild Town Crier, CA
