Raised in Southern California, Japanese-American saxophonist Kenji Lee has already made his mark as a remarkable improviser, composer, and educator. A resident of Detroit, Michigan, Kenji currently performs frequently as a leader with The Kenji Lee Quartet – a jazz quartet and Juarez – Lee – Alvarez – a jazz trio. Kenji has also worked as a sideman in many groups including Davy Lazar’s Antigoat and with soul musician, Allen Stone. Kenji currently splits his time between, performing professionally and teaching. Lee’s debut recording, Darkhorse – The Superhero, will be released in the Fall of 2019.
His newest project “Clandestine Reality” is an abstract critique of the highly surreptitious coercion continually carried out by the world’s most powerful and influential leaders. Each of Lee’s compositions delve into a specific catastrophic moment of corruption. The band bringing this music to life includes some of Michigan’s finest improvisers: Lee on Saxophones, Stephen Grady on Saxophones, Andrew Peck on Bass, and David Alvarez III on Drums/
