Umoja is the first principle of Kwanzaa, a seven-day celebration of African American culture, family, and community, and it means “unity”. Celebrations begin on December 26th by lighting the black candle on the kinara (candleholder) and discussing the principle of Umoja, which emphasizes striving for and maintaining unity in the family and community. The celebration includes discussions, a feast, and activities that reinforce the seven principles of Kwanzaa, known as the Nguzo Saba
