Sabbatical Bob is a Funk-Forward Fusion outfit that authentically blends traditional funk with elements of Jazz, Soul, Rock and R&B designed to provide a highly danceable and extremely entertaining performance experience. Based in Michigan, Sabbatical Bob is dedicated to keeping the funk alive and making their contribution to the continued living history of B.A.M (Black American Music) in Detroit and beyond. Their sound is shaped by artists such as James Brown, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince, Stevie Wonder and Lettuce.
Sabbatical Bob hit the Ann Arbor scene hard in 2016 and within a few weeks of their live debut, the band quickly found themselves playing weekend after weekend at local clubs, venues and “social engagements”, often times heading from show to show. Originally a four piece, the band quickly grew into a fully fledged Funkstravaganza and by 2018, it was time to cut a record. In 2019 SB Released their Freshman EP “Sabbatical Bob: Live and in Person”, immortalizing their iconic in-the-pocket, aka “LOCKED”, classic funk sound on wax. Raw, unfiltered, and definitely funky, this EP perfectly encapsulated what was going on, both in the band and in the underground scene in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. In spring 2020 Sabbatical Bob embarked on their “On the Run” tour across the Midwest. This propelled the band to their world debut at the Detroit International Jazz Festival where their performance was heard by thousands all across the world.
In Fall 2021 Sabbatical Bob Released their Sophmore LP “That’s a Vibe” showing off the new and improved Sabbatical Bob.
“While the first record might be a tried and true funk experience, That’s A Vibe shows Sabbatical Bob for who they really are: confident cats with more than enough conviction and pizazz to successfully shoot for the moon. On sophomore LP That’s A Vibe, Sabbatical Bob doesn’t go to space; instead, they enter
a different dimension — a “Paradise” — that is one nation, under Sabbatical Bob.” -Sam Small, Brooklyn Record Exchange
