A Metro-Detroit native, and graduate of the University of Michigan jazz program, guitarist Alex Levine relocated to New York City in 2012, where he is active as a performer, composer, and bandleader. The Alex Levine Quintet is an outlet for the original compositions of its band members, including renowned Detroit and Ann Arbor musicians Ian Finkelstein, Marcus Elliot, Joe Fee, and Julian Allen. In addition to original compositions, the band draws upon the vast continuum of the jazz repertoire. It is improvised music that reflects the contemporary sensibilities of the band, but still relates deeply to the tradition of music-making in Detroit and the lineage of masters that continue to sustain the jazz tradition.
