The latest sounds blowing in from Detroit are from the Detroit Tenors, led by tenor saxophonists Carl Cafagna and Steve Wood. The Band is a tribute to the great tenor sax pairings of the 40’s and 50’s such as Gene Ammons/Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon/Wardel Grey, Johnny Griffin/ and Lockjaw Davis/Zoot Sims. The Detroit Tenors also takes this traditions into the modern era with the arrangements from the “tenor-centric” bands of Elvin Jones, and music by contemporary players such as George Coleman and George Garzone.
Cafanga and Wood are mainstays of the Detroit jazz scene, and have performed wirh a”who’s who” of local and international greats including Marcus Belgarave, Roy Brooks, the Clayton Brothers, and the Hot Club of Detroit. The addition f the explosive rhythm team of mssr’s Gwinnell, Keller and Dobbins, you’ve got chemistry which guarantees musical fireworks!
