The Rumprollers bring a grooving and danceable mixture of jazz and Latin boogaloo. The influences of Jack McDuff, Cal Jader, Tito Puente, and Herbie Hancock are front and center. The co-leaders of the group are drummer Mark Holen, composer of half of the Rumprollers repertoire, and bassist Pete Ostle. Holen and Ostle have known each other for many years, having both grown up in Michigan. Holen now lives in New York City and Ostle lives in Washington DC.
Holen’s and Ostle’s many playing credits include a few of the following highlights. Holen was house percussionist at the Chateau Madrid nightclub in New York, and has recorded with Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez, Jimmy Knepper, and Billy Hart. He also is a Professor of Music in Lisbon, Portugal! Ostle, as bassist in the U.S. Army Band stationed in Washington DC, performed with many notable artists, including Glen Campbell, Rosemary Clooney, and Bob Hope. As founder of the A La Carte Brass and Percussion band, Ostle played numerous jazz festivals, including the Detroit Montreux Jazz Festival.
The other band members are James O’Donnell, trumpet; David Huber, saxophone; Arlene McDaniel, piano; and Steve Morris, percussion, from Detroit, Flint, and Lansing, Michigan. O’Donnell has played and recorded with the Planet D Nonet and recently released his new album Tough Talk. Huber has performed previously at Cliff Bells with RJ Spangler’s Rhythm Rockers and has recorded with Flint jazz icon, Sherm Mitchell. McDaniel recently released her new album, Timeless, and is pianist with the popular salsa band Ritmo. Morris is a congero and percussionist working with many Detroit-based musicians.
An evening with the Rumprollers band will be a swinging affair and fun for all!
